My husband was just diagnosed with Diabetes... we are planning on a cruise in May but he is now concerned about what he is going to be able to eat and is thinking that he wants to cancel...
Anyone have any experience with this... I am sure that I could request special meals but I do not remember the menu from last year...
Thanks!
Ronnie

Ronnie, too bad about your husband's diagnosis. I hope he adjusts well to his new lifestyle.
I have no personal experience with this disease, but I usually eat a low-carb diet that is pretty familiar to a mild type 2 diabetic. No sugar, avoidance of refined carbohydrates, lots of vegetables, lean protein, whole grains etc. I have had no problem on three Radisson cruises adhering to this pretty well (aside from the desserts that I got roped into eating against my will.)
Diet soft drinks, for instance, have not been a problem. I have not been on Mariner, but they seem to always have a simpler dinner menu for those who can't eat rich food, and I'm betting that he will be able to do pretty well. I would say the biggest challenge sometimes is finding the right kinds of whole grains on a cruise ship.
All that being said, I don't know what the real dietary pitfalls are for diabetics--sugary salad dressings, sauces(?). But you should certainly contact Radisson and ask them about how they will accommodate him.

Mark has been diabetic for about 20 years, and hasn't ever taken very good care of himself; he's paying the price now, and on our last Mariner cruise he watched what he ate FAR more closely. At every meal there was at least one sugar-free dessert, and most of them were yummy.
He was able to get Canada Dry Diet Ginger Ale for the first time ever, and is crushed that we can't find it here. The dinner menu has a couple of different sections with simpler, low-sodium, etc., dishes.
Plan to go and enjoy; he'll do fine.

Lynn is an absolute fanatic about health and nutrition. She has never had a problem on RSSC ships. She is probably the only person I know who can go on a 3 week cruise and lose 2-4 pounds. RSSC always has a vegetarian menu and lots of low carb food, so don't worry about it.

Pam, I found this site: http://www.sodafinder.com/ Have no idea whether he's legit or not, but it's worth a try.

Wendy, thanks! I've placed an order, and Mark is thrilled! If it ships okay, we'll order more.

Ronnie notify Radisson of his dietary requirements. I'm sure that he is not the first person to cruise with diabetes and they should be able to accomodate him. If he were on a land trip he would also have to watch what he eats and I bet the staff at whatever restaurant would be much less interested in his needs.

This will not be a problem. Fill in your guest forms with your special requirements they are very good at being sure your needs will be met.

Ronnie - should not be a problem. When I perused the menus on the Navigator and the Mariner, I easily found items on the menu that a diabetic could eat (you can take the doctor out of the office but you can't take the office out of the doctor ... :) ). In terms of dietary restrictions, this one is actually fairly easy from the kitchen's standpoint.
Remember that as a diabetic, he CAN eat anything he wants. It's really just a matter of quantity and frequency. Simple techniques such as asking for the dressing or the sauce on the side can make a potential disaster in the making into a meal that any diabetic could love.

I was sure that it would not be a problem... Masaki I like what you wrote about being able to eat anything... he is feeling pretty down about this... I will share this with him...
