We will be arriving in Rio 3 days in advance of boarding the Navigator on 12/4 and would like to hire a private guide for seeing the sights. The above post is over 3 years old so would anyone have more current advice for a guide? We're also considering staying at the Intercontinental but, while it sounds lovely, it's not downtown. Is not staying downtown a mistake?

Thanks in advance for sharing your thoughts with us.

According to my husband, you should stay on one of the beaches. Ipanema is probably the area we'll choose next year for this same trip, if we manage to get there. I would do somem googling about where to stay in Rio, and pay attention to the neighbourhoods they suggest. There are areas to avoid, I know that.

While in Rio in March, we did a post cruise at the Caesar Park on Ipanema Beach. We made the reservation through AMEX PC and were upgraded to a corner suite with great views of the beach. The late checkout feature of PC was helpful with the late flight back. There was no sense of concern about the area - took long walks - life on the beach was a show in itself.
