If you're going to Western Scotland, be sure to go to Ayr and Alloway, heart of Robert Burns country.
We stayed at the Ellisland Hotel in Ayr. 9 rooms, 4 stars. Just outside the heart of downtown, but walkable to just about everything. Fabulous food!!
It's part of the Costley & Costley chain. They have 14 small inns and hotels. Mr Costley is a chef and artist. The public areas of their hotels are filled with his water colors.
Here's a link
http://www.costley.biz/ It's about 35 miles from Glasgow airport. The worst part of driving we had was the roundabouts in Ayr aren't as well marked as they are on the motorways, and the street names change with great regularity. They are famous for their race track, and you see lots of Racecours Terrace, Racecourse Way, Racecourse Road. After going up and down the High Street, back roads, side roads, we came to a stoplight. To the right was Alloway Place, to the left was Racecourse Rd.
Such a beautiful area of Scotland!!
Take care.
