Laurie - In my limited (only a couple of visits to Sydney) experience, the best time to see the fruit bats is at daybreak, when they fly back into the Botanical Garden. It is quite a thrilling experience. Just don't stand directly under the big trees in which they hang, unless you want to take a shower right away!!
