Having just enjoyed another Regent cruise (this time on the Mariner) I have been wondering which Captain is favored by my fellow LCT memebers.

I have had the pleasure of travelling with Captains Hanssen and Dag (on the Voyager), Guillou and Delavault (on the Mariner) and Romeo (on the Navigator).

Although each of these gentlemen have quite different personalities and ways.... I have to say my favorite is the GrandMaster of the Mariner himself Captain Jean Marie Guillou.

What do others think ? Do you agree with my choice or have another star in mind. Please let me know, I cannot comment on the Paul Gauguin, Diamond or Song of Flower, but of course their Masters are also in the poll.

Knut did a great job on the transit of Gibraltar for us recently, by pointing the ship at the rock so that we gaze at it for a while from the Observation Lounge (it was cool and windy that night.)

But in general, I'm not a big fan of captains, mostly I don't really care, I never even met Knut on Voyager. But, I really enjoyed Jeremy Kingston, late of the Diamond. He had a wonderful irony about him when giving speeches, which was fairly frequent. Oh, and very welcoming on the open bridge.

We sailed on Diamond to Greece/Turkey with Capt. Neil Broomhall. He was very personable and charming.

It's so hard to choose just one. We've had memorable trips with Captains Delavault, Hanssen and Dag. The original master on the Mariner (coutou?)had such a well-run ship it was amazing. Capt. Delavault was his staff captain on that voyage.

Cheers, Anne

IMHO Guillou runs the best ship and keeps both the pax and the crew happy. He trained Dag and Dag trained Broomhall(Diamond). It was a shame to lose Broomhall when Diamond departed, but maybe he'll be back when they get a new ship. The others are capable Captains, but the only other one that interfaces well with the pax is Knut. It's a delicate balancing act to run a good ship where the crew has high morale, the ship is run well and the pax are happy. As a retired career Navy guy, I think Guillou does it best.

Those of you who are familiar with my cruising history will completely understand when I say my favorite captain is Cap'n Crunch....

Sorry - couldn't resist. ;)

LOL R! You're a man after my own heart. It is so difficult to choose a favorite Captain. I really adore several so flip a coin!

We loved Captain Romeo on the Navigator--he was out and about most of the time and would stop and talk when he met us in port. The best thing he did was take us to the Polar Ice Cap on the NINJA cruise. It wasn't something that was pre-planned, the weather was good, so he just decided to do it while he could. He'd never been there before either. Of all the things we've seen and done, that was one of the most memorable.

I thought Captain Romeo was so cute! "Hello, it's me again from the bridge"

I can't keep them straight, what was the captain's name on Mariner at the time of MINT? He had a great sense of humor. Our balcony was next to the bridge, and he and I shared a silent but humorous moment when somebody almost missed the ship in one of the ports.

R - howling!

Thanks to the blondies (better known as the grandchildren), there's French Toast Crunch (could that be Capt. Guillou?), Cinnamon Toast Crunch (must be Capt. Romeo); Captain Crunchberries (must be Capt. Hanssen); Swirled Berries (that's got to be our beloved Dag on the dance floor); and Captain Crunch Peanut Butter (Capt. Delavault).

Cheers, Anne

This was real easy!!!

I agree with Denise, Captain Neil Broomhall was by far our best Radisson Captain; Captain Knute would be next.

Go Romeo! I agree with Peggy & Pam, Captain Romeo is the best. Charming, handsome, witty and always greets us with a big hug. Sent Marilyn a cake and birthday card to our suite...how nice is that?

How funny--as of right now, the vote is a dead heat. The 6 votes for some other captain (unnamed) have to be for Neil Broomhall. I agree with Marc, he was great on our Diamond cruise. We were on the next to the last RSSC cruise on the Diamond, so he was very sentimental that whole trip--even had some tears in his eyes from time to time when he talked about having to leave RSSC. But he had a great sense of humor and kept us all laughing. We liked him a lot.

Capt. Phillipe did such a wonderful job on the San Francisco-Lima in October 2003. What could have been a true ghost story (no more than 200 people on board our leg) turned into a wonderful trip thanks to his leadership and the staff onboard. I hope you will all enjoy him on MUSH! Cheers, Anne

Almost unbelievable! All these responses and Capt. Dag isn't even an also-ran. Am I missing something? Most of them are very good, but Capt. Dag is unique.

Having now voted, I see that captains Romeo and Dag are neck and neck at 21. Whew. Capt Dag kissed my wife once, and she didn't wash her face for two days!

CF: Yes he is so nice, fun and eye candy for the ladies - they have all been wonderful - I only had problem with one no longer with Regent - well not a problem just void of personality and full of himself from first 2 Diamond cruises -

Remember that Captain Dag has less exposure to those that would be on this board.

He is on the world cruise for 4 months of the year, Regent often has him doing appearances or working on other things for about a month so his exposure for regular season cruisers is limited to about one month a year I would guess. They only work 50% of the time. People have to get to know a Captain to really build that relationship.

That said I think it is wonderful all the Captains are so close in popularity!!!!

Why would Captain Dag have less exposure on this board? I don't follow your line of thinking.

I have met several Captains, some more than once, and been on Regent for over 100 nights but have met Dag ONCE - on the WC. So my guess is unless you cruise the WC chances are you won't be "exposed" to him. Joanna

I must admit that I have liked all of the Captains with whom I had had the pleasure to cruise, but Captain Dag, in my estimation, is out standing. I find that he talks to you, not at you and goes out of his way to make you feel special. I think he makes a cruise special and it is a pleasure to cruise with him.

At the same time many people take segments of the WC. And doesn't Dag do the Baltics? I traveled with him on the Song of Flower but not yet on the Voyager.

Joanna, I agree. The most common cruises seem to be one week (or combining a B2B out of it). Few people have cruised with Capt. Dag but I agree Elaine...he is fantastic!

Yes we did segments - so unless you do Baltics or WC segments you aren't going to meet him??

I think exposure to all the captains is about equal and all are very good. For example, Captain Guillou does the Grand Asia Pasific (93 days) and Alaska. The poor guy on the Navigator is the one who gets short shrift.

Capt. Philippe does 62 day South America and Alaska. We've never been on Navigator so don't know their Capt's (I don't think).

we have done WC segments with Captain Dag, and have cruised the Med with Captain Dag twice. Once in May 2004 and again last September. He has always made himself available to all, whether up on the pool deck or at breakfast in La Veranda. This past March on the WC he was in Signatures at the next table one evening, and we really enjoyed having dinner along side his table.

Captain Romeo from the Navigator, I assume, seems to be ahead right now, so needs no sympathy! Last year in Norway, he took great delight in taking us up to the polar ice cap. It was an experience I will never forget. I've never met a captain I didn't like. Some just different personalities from the others.

We agree heartily with Olivia and Ngaire (we always agree with our dear Mother Superior) that RSSC has a group of excellent captains. We are not, however, members of the Cult of Captain Dag, because that mindset seems to reduce the stature of the other captains. We found Dag to be perfectly pleasant and correct on our Norwegian fjords cruise. On our other two Voyager cruises, we've had the great pleasure of the command of Captain Knute, who is less glamorous than Dag, but very amiable (and entirely delighted to talk to anyone about nautical matters). We think that it is a bit sad that Knute (and perhaps other captains) are so much in the shadow of Dag that some passengers think that they are not getting a "real captain" (we actually heard this absurd comment from a couple of people on WAVE) if they don't have Dag. Maybe some people spend too much time on these boards...

Cheers, Fred
