I assume you are not talking about Athens, Georgia. :D When we were looking for this fall, we decided on the Athens Hilton. It just got refurbished for the Olympics. However, for using HHonors points, it was a steal at only 25,000 per day. Many people have posted, though, that they prefer the location of the Grand Bretagne.
I can't rave enough about the Grande Bretagne! We were there precruise last October for one night. The hotel had just been totally renovated. We had a one step above standard room and it was gorgeous...with one of the most elegant bathrooms ever! Our jetlagged late night supper in the lobby bar was perfect...as was the service and the location! I'd stay there again in a heartbeat! Bonnie
Editing to add that Architectural Digest recently did a wonderful article on the GB. Pictures give you a pretty good idea of the rooms and lobby. :app:
All reviews indicate Bonnie is right, that the Grande is superb. BUT Marc is also right. At 420 Euros per night for the Grande versus 25000 Hilton points for a suite at the Athens Hilton, we went with the Hilton. Dollar for dollar, the Hilton was also about $120 Euros less per night, but dollar for free was no contest.
I found that hotels in Athens, even for the fall after the Olympics, were much higher than for other major European cities and I travel most weekends to other major EU cities. Be prepared for sticker shock. It is hard to find a 4 star under $350 exclusive of breakfast and VAT.
