First of all - I can't believe I will be missing your DDD by one week! I will have to leave cryptic notes all over the ship!

Anyway - has anyone ever taken the ferry from St. Thomas to St. John? Is it worth it? Do you need to rent a car once you get there? Any "must-see's"?
We're usually just "walk arond town-then hit the beach" kind of people. Any good beaches there?

The most beautiful beaches I've ever been to are on St. John. The ferry leaves from Red Hook and if it's too rough you may not want to go. Once you are there (pray for calm waters) it's enchanting.Go to Caneel Bay resort or rent a jeep and go around the Island and explore. We loved it.

We did this in one of our cruises( not with Radisson). Once in St. John we took a cab to Caneel Bay for lunch and then went to Trunk Bay beach. Beautiful! Good snorkeling too.
I don't care for St. Thomas. It's too commercial . However , it also has nice beaches( Meghan's (sp?) Bay) although not as nice as St. John

We took the tour to the beach at St. John's. It's a beautiful beach and worth it. Wonderful clear blue water. Just make sure you get the timetables for the the ferry as you will have to take a shuttle in St. Thomas back to the port. Make sure you account for your time appropriately.

I have taken the ferry from Red Hook to St John. However I didn't get off - it goes on to the BVI. There was no rough water at all - did this the 1st part of Jan. several years ago. Most people of the ferry were geting off at St John - day trippers. The beaches looked fantastic as we ferried by the island.
If you take it to BVI, you stop & get off at St John for customs coming back to St Thomas. This doesn't take long - but be sure to have your passport with you.

St John is fantastic! Much better than St Thomas. Highly recommended. Go eat lunch at Caneel Bay.

There are TWO different ferries on the return trip that land you in two different spots on St Thomas. One is 30-45 minutes or so via taxi to the ship, the other lands in St Thomas pretty close to the ship. Just know where you are going on the return to St Thomas (via ferry)and how much time you have.

I agree with the others, St. Thomas beaches are just too crowded with all the mega-ships stopping there. Caneel Bay Plantation is a lovely property. I stayed there many years ago for a vacation and the beach is great.
