My wife and I have cruised the oceans and seas extensively....delightful way to travel.
We have cruised Regent, Silversea, and Windstar....we've very pleased with all of them and especially appreciate the open seating at meals; we greatly prefer a table for two. Traveling is our best chance to be together, and we greatly value the private time.
What are the chances of getting a table for two on any of the quality river cruising lines???
Thanks for any help!

GeneBK, my recollection from our Danube cruise on Amadeus is that most of the tables seated either four or six. We were traveling with another couple and so always sought out a four-top. However, I THINK I remember there being several tables for two.
Once the LCT group scheduled to board one of the Amadeus ships tomorrow does so, you should be able to get the definitive answer at least for that cruise line.

On our last AMA river cruise there were some tables for 2, but they were very close to adjacent tables for 4--making it easy for 6 people to share a conversation. But you could choose the table for 2 and keep to a "private" conversation. But you should know that the tables are not assigned each night, so to get one of the tables for 2 you'd need to be one of the first into the dining room each evening.

Just back from Amadaeus, and yes Gene, those tables for two are located just a couple of inches to one side of tables for 4, as Cruise Muse said. I was a single on that cruise, and enjoy socializing, and even getting a table of 7 with a seat at the end of a 6 was something that seemed strange to them until they got used to it. Forget a private table on that particular boat unless yours is not full, and you can sit 2 at a 4 top.

We were on Scenic last summer. Had a table for two every day for lunch and dinner. We found that many preferred tables for 4 or 6 and we didn't have a great deal of competition but we did make sure we were at the dining room door at the time in which it opened so that we could get our table. We got very close to our wait staff as the tables for two were in one area.

Susan: We are thinking seriously about a Scenic river cruise next year. Was there anything that would stop you from booking again (apart from them not having a second lounge). Ta. Lee

Lee, We really liked the all inclusiveness of Scenic plus the boats are all new and most rooms have balconies. We found the majority of the tours they arranged were quite good. I would definitely recommend the top deck if you are going for a balcony. We did miss having a second lounge but you are on land most of the day and by the time you finish dinner there isn't much time for lounging. We found the guests and crew quite friendly. Most of the guests on our ship were Australian; had less than a dozen Americans and about the same for Canadians. Only had two Europeans. It is my understanding they are marketing more in North America and Europe now so this demographics might change.

Susan: Thanks for your comments. I'm not sure I want to travel half way around the world to meet up with a bunch of Aussies, but I won't let that stop me trying river cruising. Lee

Ha! Lee, I remember when Ngaire was looking into river cruises, she mentioned to me (perhaps at dinner on a Regent ship) that Scenic's pax were mostly from Australia and New Zealand. Those boats do look wonderful. I do like the balcony idea, but realize in Europe, they are pretty much limited in the width of the boats by the widths of the canals. So inside room has to "give up" space for balcony. Perhaps Scenic has a floor plan that turns things around to allow it.

Marcie: You could always get a group together and join us!
I've seen the layout of the cabins and it's quite clever. Ngaire said they worked well but whether they work with me and my husband sharing, that's another thing altogether!!! He won't cruise so I am a tad apprehensive about river cruising with him. Michael will be with us, so we can always swap!!! Lee
