Went out to Circuit City today and got the pc card and the wireless router. :) Called the cable company to ask them for some guidance and they kinda laughed at me and said good luck!

They got me started, and everything was AOKAY until the PC card was installed, and then no internet!! :( I uninstalled the program, called them back, and then we could not get back on-line. That took another half hour. cheer Jan

Did you call the company than produced your wireless router and PC card? I have Linksys and they were able to get me organized over the phone. Like you, my cable company would not offer any help - they want you to buy their equipment and pay monthly fees.

You might also ask for help from your computer savy friends or co-workers. The staff at Circuit City will certainly know professionals that help with installations.

Don't give up - wireless is great!

Jan - sorry about the difficulties that you had. Which version of Windows are you running?

Margo, I had picked up the same product at CC this morning that you have. But, never thought to call the company themselves. Oh well.

Masaki, I have Windows XP. I might give it another college try later. When there are friends around to make it a party to get the wireless thing going. But, I will continue to have the cord from the cable company- modem running to the laptop.

P.S. I am the expert at the office on the computer. Thus it will be friends, that will make it happen! :) Jan

Jan-

Sorry to hear of your troubles. Sometimes it's as easy as 5 clicks on some software on the CD that comes with the router.....other times, well, it's a bit more complicated. Hopefully you will be wireless soon.

Hi. Yesterday the Financial Times/FT.com reported on the importance of securing wireless no matter where you are, a reminder similar to that ChatKatR posted above. "[Wireless] Users need only disable file-sharing on their laptops and install a firewall to prevent them being hijacked."

Don't get discouraged. I consider myself a computer person and I could not set up the Lynksys system. I returned it and bought the Microsoft System [Linked Image]
I was able to set it up in 10 minutes. You must follow the directions exactly or it won't work

So I am at Starbucks in my town on T Mobile's Hot Spot on my laptop right now! Got to love technology! Of course my DSL went down at home late this morning.

I have the G4 Powerbook, too; it came with all of that in it, but I don't have a wireless router here at home. One day...

Sitting at Starbucks on your laptop. I am so jealous. And did you have your puppy - is it TJ? - sorry can't remember his name with you.
All this + 10,000 Delta miles. It's enough to give me a case of those southern "vapors."

Pam - ah, but if you went to a Starbucks with a T-mobile Hot Spot, you could set up an account and surf wirelessly from there with your G4 Powerbook. Could be a nice lazy Sunday AM. :)
