Thanks for the info on the Black Angus/Red Angus situation. I grew up on a Black Angus ranch here in Oklahoma in the 50' and 60's. As you point out, a Red couldn't be registered, and if a cow bore a red calf, the whole pedigree on both sides was in question. Yet, many registered "Black Angus" cattle had just a little red tint here and there!

Here's another interesting thing about Black Angus. Back in those years, we were breeding for very short legged and thick bodied stock. Short noses were preferred. But breeders took this direction so far, and then began to have dwarf calves. As dwarfism is about the worst thing to have in registered cattle bloodlines, a large number of otherwise valuable breeding stock was sold at the stock yards. As your photo of cattle shows, the "ideal" Angus is now longer legged longer nosed, and a bit less "chunky" in the body than the prize winners of 40 and 50 years ago, as evidence of the move by breeders to avoid dwarfism.

Thanks,
Richard :) :) :)

Richard,
I can sorta understand breeding for stockier body and shorter legs (more meat?) but why shorter noses?????

Dwarfism was before my time but there were other gremlins out there like double muscle and a few others. Because of this breeders learned to breed out these undesirable traits and change things for the better. Those thick short cattle couldn't live very well and what you have today are catlle that can exist better in their own enviroment.

There was a lawyer/cattleman from Guthrie named Chiga in your neck of the woods. His statement was "do your cattle look sexy" I used laugh at that but when you look at that picture. Those cows do. They were his by the way.

This thread is now rated as a "Hot Topic"

Who knew there were so many breeds of cattle. Most of us just pick up a package of steaks or a gallon of milk in the supermarket. This web site from Oklahoma State lists all the different breeds from around the world. Taking a cruise, want to know what cows you'll run into - this is the site for you!
cattle breeds

For those of you going on ROAR - the 1st breed listed is Africander - native to South Africa.

Yes, John, today for me seemed to be about shopping with my son for Christmas (all the way home I heard on talk radio this is not a PC word), but we got it all done. Still didn't learn about bunnies or cows and reindeer. This time of year, I am worrying that a deer will hop across the highway in my path!

LeeAnne, I have considered you one of our fold since you first started posting. I hope to cruise with you someday, and wish more people would hop on like you did and just start to post away! It is very easy when you are travelling with others (spouses or friends) to just lurk. Joining in is really fun! Ngaire always organizes parties when it is a group thing. When you are going solo like I do sometimes, it is fun to get on one of her group cruises, as you will always have people to eat and be with!

The answer is:

IN THE GARDEN OF EDEN

The title of this Iron Butterfly song was supposed to be "In The Garden Of Eden," but the singer slurred his words so much that it came out mostly unrecognizable. Someone had written "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida," possibly while drunk (according to legend), on a demo copy. A record company executive saw it and decided to use it as the title, since it sounded mystical, and Eastern spirituality was big at the time, with The Beatles going to India and The Rolling Stones experimenting with Indian instruments.

The following is a very feable attempt to re-produce my message late yesterday, removed, apparently because it was not a "happy post".

I love my '95 Buick Park Avenue; it does all the things those "imports" would have done 10 years ago at a cost of $30-40,000 higher....Chippy, what should I do, only 55,000 miles, with only 10,000 miles on 4 new tires?!!

LeeAnne, thank you for bringing that "in agada" thing to my attention! Somehow, I was on the "cusp" of that generation, and probably, unfortunatly for me never enjoyed the fruits of all it meant! Or maybe I was just a little goody two shoes. Anyway, most of my girlfriends were not!

I never did drugs. Of any kind. That's what makes me a goody two shoes. Not sure that when I get to be in my 70's that would not be an option. Alcohol has been my option (er, drug) of choice so far.

Olivia, I'm in your shoes too. No drugs and always the "goody-goody". I was always afraid that I would get caught. I didn't even know that my girlfriends in high school smoked and drank. Duh! Even in college, the drugs didn't come until I was leaving. I can't help it...just a nice person and that's not so bad! However, I do like my wine :angel2:
