Just so I don't de-rail the thread on packing for Alaska, thought I would start one here for Pip.
We can talk about what to bring and not bring.
I have read various posters in the past who say that they have done the PG with a carry-on only. Given the informality of the ship, I think this would be possible for a man, but not sure I can manage it. Not if I want to also be a little elegant, which is also part of the ship's ambience. Any takers?
What I think we will do is have a single checked bag (my wheeled suit bag), plus our carry-ons.
It is true that both times we have been, we came back with clean, unworn clothes. So my advice is to under-pack. That will leave room for all the pareos and coconut soaps and other souvenirs.
I only bring one bathing suit--I have read about people who bring three! Can't see that myself, although I may *buy* a new suit this spring. Which could mean that I might bring two!

Wendy, great post, thanks for starting this..best packing list for the PG I have seen is done by Jim B, see below:
Very timely considing we have less than 30 days then we are wheels up to FP!

1)You are probably about packed but I thought I would send you this little helpful packing list. Take a cheap air matress. Great to use on Tahaa but if you do the beach in Bora Bora it really comes in handy. Just leave it when you are finished. 2)12 ft extention cord if you want to use the hair dryer in the bathroom and not at the dressing table by the bed. 3)some extra hangers 4)No coat and ties!! 5)Here is what I would take if I ever get the opprotunity to go back to FP 2 pair shorts. (khaki & navy or black) 2 pair slacks (khaki & navy or black)Docker style or dress slacks. Either one ok. 3 swim trunks 4 T-shirts (one to wear snorkling) 4 polo /short sleeved sport shirts 1 pair reef shoes 1 pair sandels 1 pair dress shoes I would pack all the shoes and heavy things in a 16 inch satchell that hooks over a 25 inch suitcase handle. I would take an additional 16 inch satchell which I would use as a carry on. This way you will not have to worry about the 50 pound per bag limit,(2 bags per person), and when tugging them around the airport you are only pulling one bag with one over your shoulder. Ladies make adjustments to this list. Sun dresses work fine. Make sure you take a shawl. Perfect for going to dinner. Don't be afraid to wear something more than once. You will see that the people who do a lot of traveling do this.

Wendy - I second the thanks for starting this thread. I need all the help I can get and it's never too early to start thinking of what to bring and wear.
Wes - Jim's list is great. Very simple and concise. Plus, I love his idea about the 16 inch satchells to save on weight for both check in and carry on. Anyway we can travel lighter will be wonderful!!!
I've read from almost everyone's posts that the ladies should take at least 2 bathing suits. Mostly because it takes awhile for them to dry. Did you find that to be a problem Wendy?
Being a totally A/R person, I've started a folder with "What to Bring/Wear". I'll go thru it and will soon post good ideas I've run across. No time today.

The very first cruise we took I had 5 months to prepare. I started a list & added to it when I thought of something. This came in very handy. I keep a new and revised list for every cruise. I very rarely forget anything. Last cruise I took 2 pair of black slacks & matching tops. It worked out great! It cut down on a lot of luggage. Bathing suits do take a long time to dry, I like to bring clothes pins instead of throwing your clothes over the line.

Don't forget to bring a floppy, ugly, wide-brimmed hat with a chin strap. Indespensible!
Thanks, Richard :) :) :)

Ha ha, right you are Richard. Although I usually make do with a baseball cap. It helps that I have long hair, don't have to worry so much about the back of my neck!

Two things I forgot on the list. One was the hat and two was tennis shoes or walking shoes if you like to do the jogging track or do serious walking.

My husband David doesn't wear polo shirts. So I get him nice summery resort shirts instead. Some are silk, some are linen, some are cotton. And three pairs of light coloured pants, one saved for rough and tumble, the other two for dining.
I also managed to buy him a pair of shorts (he never wears shorts), and he found them comfy in the heat.
The first time we went, I had to dissuade him from wearing cowboy boots and jeans. At the time he was virtually living in his cowboy boots. And he lives in his jeans all year round (he's an academic!)

The reef shoes on the list are absolutely essential! We're going back on the PG this fall and I plan to bring two pairs of Tevas this time so I can put on a dry pair after a morning at the motu.

I would like to recommend another item of clothing...go to a scuba shop and buy a long sleeved snorkling top. It is specially coated to prevent sunburns, which are great when you are floating on your stomach...no terrible back burns.
I found that most women dressed up at dinner each night and there was a formal night. I think 2 nights were informal, with one being a pareo night. I didn't need much in the way of shorts or slacks or tops. You will need shorts of some type if you ride the waverunner.
For the daytime, you can get by with bathing suits (at least 3) and some pareos, which you can buy in Tahiti at the market for about $15 each. You will need sandles and reef shoes.
Think 6 outfits for the evenings, one being formal.
Doug wore Tommy Bahama entirely during the evening and brought one jacket. It could get chilly in the dining room. He wore bathing suits, polo shirts or tee shirts and shorts during the day.

Whoa: Last time we were on the PG was exactly two years ago, so I may be behind times. But on our PG cruises there were NO formal nights and NO informal nights. All were casual. Have there been changes in this regard? Thanks, Richard

From the RSSC site but I seem to remember reading that some gentlemen like to wear a jacket on the evening of the Captains' reception/dinner. But I could be making that up...
Here, the constraints of formal wear, tuxedos and ties are forgotten and the only dress code is "relaxed."

Right, my husband did not take a jacket with him last time at all. A few men wore jackets, and there were even a few tuxes on the captain's dinner night, but very few, especially in 2003.

There are no formal nights on the PG. Sun dresses and dressy slack outfits were the norm for ladies. A few but very few formal dresses. Polo/sport shirts/floral shirts were the norm for men. Some dress slacks, but lots of Docker styles. A few guys had sports coats on but NO ties. We wore colored t-shirts for snorkling and did not have any problems with sun burns.

Good!!
Glad to hear the PG hasn't gone formal on us, as we are booked on a 14 day cruise on Sept. 17 '05 on her --- the one that does not go the Marquesas. I had ALWAYS understood that all evening dress codes were casual, and I'm happy there has been no change.
On our three weeks so far on the PG, some men chose to wear a sports jacket. I did from time to time --- not because I had to but because I wanted to do so. I've even seen a hand full of men with a jacket and tie. But I personally never saw a dark suit, let alone a tux.
Glad to see nothing has changed.
Thanks, Richard :) :) :)

We have been 5 times on the PG, most recently in November and there are no formal nights. There is the traditional Captain's welcome aboard party but the dress is still casual. There were a few men in sports coats and I have seen women in a nice dress, however, the beauty of the PG is you can be as casual as you want as long as you don't wear jeans or shorts to dinner. I think Jim's list is exceptional. The only thing I might add is some sort of beach bag (I use a back pack) to carry your towel, sunscreen, hat, watch, etc. I agree with MarnaLou that the water shoes are an absolute essential.
I think the first time we went we took 2 large suitcases plus a carryon. I don't think we wore 50% of what we took. In November we took one suitcase and our dive bag. We didn't even need a carryon and we got along great. I always use a backback as my handbag so it can carry bottled water, passports, sunglasses, etc. and don't even take a purse.

Do any of the ladies wear capri pants to dinner or are they to casual? We will be on the March 12th sailing. I have several new pair that can be dressed up with the right shoes, etc. that I was planning on taking. Any advice?
Thanks, Kim

Kim, I would think that if they are nice capris they will be fine. Think silk and linen for dinner on the PG. The dress code is casual but it's also elegant.

Here's my personal essentials list, not including an exhaustive clothing list, cosmetics, books, jewellery, etc.: 4 pairs of shoes: - reef shoes - running shoes - sports sandals - dressy sandals Sun gear (I have a sun allergy): - longsleeved shirt, treated with Rit Sunguard, for deck and beach use - snorkelling t-shirt, ditto above - two pareos - 2 hats - lots of SPF 45 or 50 sunscreen - good sunglasses (for reading as well as distance) Water and beach: - bathing suit(s) - reef shoes - beach bag (I don't bother with the air mattress, since have to sit or lie in the shade, so I don't get to float around on top of the water much!) First aid: - reactine (antihistamine) - disinfectant wipes - lip balm - bonamine (seasickness) - afterbite (for insect bites) - bandaids

Here is a good site for lycra swim skins (for those of us who are quite sun sensitive and don't want to get burned while snorkeling), as well as "rash shirts", which are lycra shirts (both short and long sleeved) to wear for water sports. Lighter than cotton t-shirts and dry much faster. http://www.divingduds.com/skins.html The lycra swim skins and rash shirts are also rated at UPF 50+ for sun protection, so you don't have to spray them with Sunguard, Wendy. Of course, the worrisome thing is the idea of me and Pat in skin-tight lycra!! Not something for the Paul Gauguin brochure... Cheers, Fred

Freddie, I hear you. But those people in the brochures aren't real! You and I are. I had been thinking just today that I should look for something a little more form-fitting for the water. Nice thing about being in the water, is that nobody can see you
I think I'll stick with a t-shirt, but maybe a long-sleeved one, and soak it in Sun Guard.

Everyone is giving such good tips on this thread. What a HUGE help!!!
Wendy, I really like your list. It will help keep me focused on what we really need to bring.
One question I have - no one ever seems to mention flip flops. Tom lives in them in the summer and I usually wear them around pools and just walking around in the summer. Do the Teva sandals take the place of those, or would we want a pair of flip flops too? I've never had Teva's but it seems like so many people wear them in hot climates. Marsha, I like your idea about having 2 pairs so you always have a dry pair.

Funny Cyndi, I was thinking about flip-flops and other casual sandals. But on the ship, things are somewhat elegant, so I'm thinking another pair of nice sandals, and then the tevas for roughing it and water sports.
It's also true that on the motus and snorkelling trips, reef shoes are the ticket, so don't know if flip flips would really be that useful.

Wendy, I agree about the reef shoes - those are on my list to get (unless my old ones from 1987 are still any good :D ). So during the day, if we are hanging out by the pool (if we ever find time to do that too :) ) we would still wear a nicer pair of sandals? I do have a pair that would do, but I wouldn't want to get them wet. I'm just so confused

Well no, flip-flops would certainly be fine hanging out by the pool.
The pool deck is used for lots of parties, and they are very informal. But there also isn't much shade out there, so lolling in a lounger becomes problematic--the sun is very strong. And the pool is *very* small. Last time I was there, it was Easter, and the pool was full of children. Also, dive lessons happen in the pool the first day or two.
And of course, you have your balcony, you lucky guys! We dropped down to a window cabin some time ago (and held on to the b2b instead.)
I will be chasing shade whenever I can, which can mean roaming around the ship as it twists around at anchor!

I wonder if a small collapsable umbrella (maybe a brightly colored one) would be useful for shade?
Cyndi, us California girls will definitely need our flip flops! Multiple pairs!

I agree about the flip-flops, how can you go on the beach without flip-flops?? John is also one who lives in Teva's, or similiar brands. When we were on the Diamond (DDD) in the Caribbean there were many men wearing them at the pool. I think this has been addressed, but I will ask anyway: I understand Tux's aren't the norm, but for the guys, on the formal/informal nights do they need ties, jacket, the whole shabang? On the informal nights John is hoping he can get away with a shirt/jacket.

Kimmi,
I thought that Tommy Bahama / resort style shirts were acceptable for all nights - no jackets at all. i seem to remember Ngaire saying that Ken did not bring a jacket and that if that was the case, Marc was leaving his jacket home too. Frank would prefer no jacket, if it's acceptable, although, since I bought him the silk t-shirts for jacket required evenings, he doesn't mind as much as he used to. He wore a sport coat or suit and tie (he's a CPA) every day for 25 years. He's shed that now for the last 10 or so, but, he hates to wear a tie and coat unless it's absolutely required.

Kathy & Kimmi - maybe flip flops are a coastal thing. They are a huge fashion item out here with all styles & colors. Some even have little heals on them and some with rhinestones. I stick to the simple ones, but I promise they will look nice, not shabby. I also saw that Teva has some flip flops too!
Kathy, I was thinking the same thing about the umbrella - espcially for the Children of Raiatea. But then, I'll need to stay on the side or back so I wouldn't block views. I'm so short that then I wouldn't see. But I'd be out of the sun :D
Wes, our husbands will want a full report on the jacket issue. Kathy, Tom is like Frank about not wanting to wear jackets. Then, we also got him some of the silk t-shirts and now he doesn't mind a sports jacket with those. He even wears them without the jacket. I love the look w/ or w/o the jacket. I doubt that he'll even bring the jacket. That was one of my enticements to get him on this cruise - casual wear!!!
Kimmi, it is my understanding that there are no typical formal or informal nights, with all nighttime dress being Resort Casual. I have a couple of summery tropical print skirts that I'll wear with lightweight tops and a pair of black silk pants that I'll wear a couple nights with different tops. And a couple of sundress type dresses. That should do it. Plus I can wear some of that on pre-cruise if I want.

Cyndi, rhinestone flip-flops were a big thing here last summer too. Not particularly popular right now with snow on the ground.
Kimmi, everyone else is right--no jacket required, ever, but bring one along if you like, for the captain's reception. One of the big carrots to get my husband David on the PG the first time, was the "no jacket" requirement--he actually brought one that trip, but did not wear it.

Kimmi, I saw (maybe) two men that wore suits on PG last year. In fact it is comfortably casual. There was a group from Russia that wore torn faded blue jeans to dinner & nothing was said to them. I am not a fancy person, but I really didn't think that they were dressed appropriate for dinner. But, maybe they thought they looked OK.

I didn't mean to start anything on formal and informal dress. I guess I dressed up too much on the cruise. Doug only wore Tommy Bahama. I think he brought a blazer for the cool dining room..not because it was required. I don't remember ANYONE wearing ties, but some of the women dressed up...no evening dresses, though.
As far as the umbrella...I only remember one motu where there wasn't shade. The other motu had umbrellas. You really need one on deck, but where would you put it?

Hi, There is also a small UV umbrella that is available on www.magellans.com. (I am not as computer savvy to post the link  ) So a little cut/paste is in order. UV Protection Umbrella - $19.95 Protect yourself from harmful UV rays (and sudden downpours) with our London Fog UV Protective Umbrella. This unique, ultra-compact sun and rain umbrella is constructed of specially treated nylon fabric with a double layer of silver reflective coating for maximum protection from the sun. Rated UPF 50+, it blocks 99.9% of UVA and UVB rays from reaching your skin, and helps keep you cool and comfortable. It opens to a full 40" arc, yet is just 6-1/4" long folded for easy packing. Includes a matching cover, with clip for attaching it to your belt or day bag. (6¼ x 2½ x 1¾"; 7 oz) Thanks for all the great tips. I am adding all of this to my file! Miriam

Good to hear about the jackets. John will be thrilled. I do remember now the discussion w/Marc and Ngaire re. NO jackets. Fine, more room for my clothes :D I will definitely be bringing flipflops and sandals (nice ones), sundresses, simple skirts and maybe some capri's.

Andi,
Finally a good reason to pack duct (Duck?) tape besides a torn suitcase!

WISH i WERE GOING WITH YOU! Kathy, you can tape me to your suitcase. (The authorities wouldn't notice a short blond, would they? You could say that I am just part of the suitcase design.)

oops, also forgot to say that I read that there are no plugs in the bathroom. The suggestion was to bring an extension cord....

There is a hairdryer in the bathroom, which works on the European voltage. Then there's a US plug, but it's just for a shaver. That's what I remember.
So, if you need to bring your own hair dryer (I don't), then you will want an adapter for the bathroom, an extension cord from the bedroom, or you can just use it in the bedroom.
Someone can correct me if I have it wrong.

I don't know how I skipped over this, I was unaware of the US/European voltage situation on the PG. I probably will bring a hair dryer, is there a plug near a mirror in the cabin?? I normally don't dry my hair in the bathroom, it's get's too steamy for me. Maybe I should just go ala natural aka frizzy

Kimmi, if we are going to end up with our natural bodies, we might as well go for the natural hair too :D :D I get the frizzies too. That's why I'm letting my hair grow long enough so I can pull it back or up. Great for bad hair days!!

Kimmi, yes, there's a US plug (and a European plug I think), in the bedroom, by the vanity mirror. Perhaps someone else can confirm my memory.

Yes Cyndi and Kimmi. Being able to put your hair up is a definite plus, given the weather. My hair is very straight and fine, lack-luster and dull in the winter cold. I love it when it gets thick and frizzy in the warm weather! By the end of the week, we will all have gone native and be very laid back and relaxed about everything, including our hair!

Wendy is correct. There are both US and European plugs at the vanity in the bedroom. In our cabin the US plug was on the right side and the European on the left.

Wendy,
My hair sounds like yours and when it gets wet, and dries with out a blow dryer, well, it does nothing that looks decent. Might let it grow long enough for a pony tail at least. Also thought about some kind of gel to slick it down so it won't be all fly-away under my hat.

Uh Oh, the hair thing...
My hair is like Michael Jackson's when he was still black. (I hope that's not too non PC). I won't be able to fit through the doorway unless I take drastic measures.
AH HA! Another use for duct tape. (ouch)

Suzanne,
That was funny!
I guess we will just have to accept each other for all of our faults. Either that or wear very dark sunglasses.

Seems there are a lot of us frizz-heads out there! Once on a crewed sailboat charter I couldn't dry my hair for a week because of the power. So had had to get gel and scruntch after shampooing it and settle for looking for a week like I permed it. When Marcie hit FP, she sent me an SOS to bring some pony tail scrunchies and some sort of conditioner when I got on the ship. I couldn't find the hair product, but brought her some Redken Straight, and it made her hair so straight one one side that even the curling iron wouldn't curl it!

Suzanne, I erred. The product Marcie used was Redken's "Smooth Down", and the bottle says it "tames frizz on even the most rebellious hair"
The "Straight" she did not use. That product says, "kick out kinks, curls and frizz with humidity resistant smoothness". It behooves all of us with this problem to just keep trying till we find something that works. I think I even brought this along for you to try on Black Sea, and forgot to share it! I think you have to buy them at a salon.

My take is just don't let "the hair" ruin a good time. Just not worth it, as Marcie knows, given she posts picures with the frizzies! Gotta love her for it.

There is a plug for the hair dryer at the dressing table in the cabin, which also has a nice mirror. There is only one plug, however, so if you have a curling iron or hot curlers, you have to dry your hair first then other items second.
