August 13
This morning we anchored in a fjord off Brattahid aka Qassiarsuk, where Eric the Red settled after being banished from Iceland and Norway for committing murder. A statue of his son, Lief Ericson, towers over the modern day farm community of about 50. Nearby are the ruins of his manor house and a recreation of a Norse longhouse and what is believed to be the first Christian church in North America, built for Eric the Red's wife when she converted to Christianity. We had a very dramatic guide who told us the whole story with considerable aplomb.
