Donna - we do that here in Hawaii too. We have torch ginger that you can squeeze the flower to release the juice in the flower - you can use it to wash your hands or to shampoo your hair (it's in a variety of commercial shampoos as well as a fragrance - you might have seen Paul Mitchell's awapuhi shampoo before? That's what awapuhi is. :) )
