How it works in our house:

Tony: Why can't you organize the refrigerator? Small jars go large jars go blah blah blah...also, "you never discussed that with me"

Joanna: Do NOT erase my phone messages because you are anal (clean slate)..also, "You never listen, call Beltone"

OMG Joanna, Mark and I just had the same conversation about the fridge yesterday but it was ME complaining! He was cramming the giant bottle of pop on the top shelf instead of putting it where it belongs, on the bottom shelf!!!

Tony was only child of very anal Italian mother - her fridge could be photographed - tell Mark I relate - poor guy - I shove it in wherever it fits -

That's the problem, those large pop bottles don't fit on the top shelf, he wedges them in. There is plenty of room on the bottom shelf, though!

Editing to add, don't get me wrong, my fridge is nothing to brag about. I have found yogurt that is several months old and all those condiments on the door shelves, some of them are ancient!

I think, Nancy, very fine line between those wonderful Jewish/Italian mothers - they were into their fridges and cooking (and cleaning!!!) My MIL was a wonderful lady - but OMG when she visited me she would roll up my rugs to vacuum ..YIKES!!

Joanna, you just tell Tony that he should be grateful you book the right cruises while he is snoozing! Those jars can sit wherever they fit, as long as that "just right" cruise is on the docket! ;)

Editing to add, I hope he is "good" with the Auckland-LA cruise next December??? If not, I'll join you!!!!

We can commiserate Joanna. Had to cancel GREECE to fit in LAMB. I agree with you, it is a much better "deal".

I could add to the "lecture" series but it's late and I'm sleepy. Alan and I made an agreement, the garage is his and the kitchen is mine although I have to remind him about that once in a while .

Joanna, are Italian MILs similar to Irish MILs? Jim was taught to clean, do laundry & pick up after himself. Going back to his pre Vatican II schooling, most things are black & white to him. But he is an excellent travel agent & plans exquisite trips.

We enjoy Italy very much & the best site he has found is SlowTrav.com. It is written by travelers who stay in one spot for awhile & take day trips from a central hub. Excellent hotel & restaurant recommendations. There are many countries listed but Italy & France predominate.

Jackie: SlowTrav is a wonderful site. I think your MIL did you a huge favor raising a son who has some household skills. I don't know how my 100% Irish family went wrong but..the males seemed to viewed as "princes" by their mother's while the girls did all the work. I think MIL'S who teach their sons to know basic homemaking 101 are GEMS!!

My Mother's families were in the colonies dating back to Revolutionary days but she did teach her two sons basic homemaking 101; likely because her three daughters came later. The story goes that my brothers had no use for my oldest sister until she became old enough to take over some of their household chores.

Both of my SIL'S loved my Mom. In the early 1950's when my oldest brother was still a relative newly-wed he and his wife both overslept one morning. She panicked, fearing she would be late for work. He told her not to worry, that he would iron her uniform (she is a RN) while she took a quick shower. She liked our Mom before that day and that really sealed the affection.

Cute story Kathy! Those well trained men can thank their Mom's - I told both of my DIL's if they expected nothing from their husbands that is what they would get - and NOT to weaken MY years of training!!

Oh yes, I have a hubbie who is the product of an Irish/Italian family. He is an engineer to boot.

My lecture from him? PUT YOUR SHOES AWAY!!!

Ok, I will admit that I do tend to kick off my shoes once in the house and not necessarily put them in the closet. Is that a sin???

He puts all my clothes after laundry in one place in my closet...can't he see that the pants, shirts and dresses are arranged separately??

Yes, I know, at least he does laundry!!

All kidding aside; he is the best man I can ever imagine. A great husband, dad and everything else:-)

Lauri,

Jim does all our laundry & I have had significant shrikage in everything cotton due to his cooking everything in the dryer. However, these things are easily replaced & the alternative is (shudder) doing my laudnry myself.

He also cleans with way too much lemon pledge & the whole apt smells like a pine forset when he does the floors with pinesol, but again the alternative?

We have enjoyed a wonderful & clean 35 years together.

Yes, I've learned that if something shouldn't go in the dryer, I shouldn't put it in the laundry basket. Same goes for things likely to "bleed" color. We have a fair amount of pink underware from before I figured that out.

After I load the dishwasher, it usually gets rearranged by someone who thinks I don't provide maximal surface exposure of all items. Yes, he's an engineer too.

Joanna, tell DH that when the spoons (particularly soup spoons) are all together they sometimes "spoon" or nest with each other and don't get washed as well. It is for this reason that I purposely try to mix my flatware up in the compartments.

Oh yes, the dishwasher. I just stay away from it or from wiping down the kitchen counter for that matter. He comes behind me with a squeegee because I might have missed a spot.

Finding this thread late - dishwasher too funny -until he loaded the knives in the front blades up! And why do I stack things - stacks and stacks all over the house! We now have a separate laundry basket for red clothes. And how often have I heard "Did I tell you you got a message from someone the other day?"

Exactly! When some time later is the "Why didn't you call me back?" question that I dread.

And why when he empties the dishwasher does he get creative about where things go? Put them back where they came from!

Though at least he does laundry and empties the dishwasher. He irons like a dream too!

Sue: I have a couple of friends who say at end of message "Tony do not erase this please" - Tony claims he enjoys emptying dishwasher and since I hate that chore - maybe I'll just leave that job for him - ah yes the ironing that's a nice "extra"

You all are too funny!

Placing only like utensils in each compartment in the dishwasher!!! Why did I never think of that! :nw: But I can relate to the strong smell when he would dust the furniture! Plus when he was finished he would just leave the can of pledge and the dust cloth on the dresser... it would stay there for a month if I didn't put it away!

The best thing I ever did was to show him the "Swiffer"!!!!!! He loves that thing!!! (and I haven't had to do a floor since!)

Ok - here's the 411 on my house....

We each do our own laundry. Iron? Who irons? We send everything to the cleaners.

I load the dishwasher, he unloads.

We alternate on taking out the trash and dealing with the cat box.

He is in charge of the automobiles.

Paul has OCD when it comes to the fridge. I'm surprised I'm even allowed to open it. All the labels face forward and everything is lined up like little soilders. All the meat is broken down into portions, cryovacked, labeled and frozen - separated by type. He wept when they came out with those Glad Ware storage things. It's all very strange, really.

Alan has "selective vision". After dinner, he cleans the kitchen while I "check email" (which really means go on LCT). He is always so proud of the job he's done. EXCEPT, he only cleans the table and area around counter-top where the sink is located. ALWAYS forgets to look to the other side of the kitchen where the stove and all the dirty pots and pans are waiting to be washed. Guess who does that part?

He has a thing about neat pantries. He pointed out yesterday that ours needs cleaning. I told him it would have to be in February after I put away all the Christmas decorations.

Besides that, we have an understanding. The garage is his and the kitchen is mine. We try to respect each other's turf

Editing to say: just had a huge senior moment. already posted that last part about his garage and my kitchen earlier on this thread. Oh my, I need a cruise

I loved the garage post Donna & twice was better- I wanted to enter ours in "most unbelievable garage" - meaning a disaster!! I cannot believe the cars fit in- it is Tony's room - he is a hoarder - kids cleaned it 3 yrs ago 8am-5pm- he sat on sidelines crying as they threw out rusty tools, empty insecticide bottles, old rafts, and many boxes small appliances came in you may want to return them??? and 15 empty cat litter buckets goes on forever (he has replenished since) it stayed clean for 6 months? Same guy who aggravates me about the fridge!!

Joanna, that is too funny that Tony is so neat with the refrigerator and then the garage (his room) is a disaster. At our house, I tend to be the neat one (yes, every type of food has a specific place in the refrigerator/pantry). Grant is a hoarder (I call it packrat). Here's an example from just last week. We had a whole drawer of cassette tapes (mainly from the 80's) in a drawer in our wall unit. Of course, with CDs and MP3s, we have not played any of those tapes in years. So we decided to "get rid of" the cassette tapes. My idea of "get rid of" was to throw them away. Grant's idea was to put them in a storage bin and keep them...just in case we need them someday. Huh? Whatever, as long as he finds a place to store them...

Once when I was out with a group of accountants (I am one), one of them had everyone open their wallets and show how their currency was arranged. Each and every one of the accountants had their bills organized in order, small to large, with the faces forward and right side up. Anybody else have their wallet organized that way?

Dena

I do that Dena!! I am also someone who never balances her check book - I simply enter the check amount of $23.09 as $24.00 and it has worked for years - somehow those two traits don't seem to mesh! I have bored others with my tale of cleaning out Tony's office when he was gone for 5 days. It was a huge job and my cleaning woman helped me. I needed her youth, energy and encouragement. He seemed physically ill when he returned and looked in the room. The atmosphere in this house was very "testy" for a few weeks.

Well, of course the ex-banker/accountant would!
and due to my friend, a Professional Organizer, even our spices are alphabetized. My bad habit is that my shoes come off at my desk at home and stay there for a day or two.

And then my husband even folds his credit card receipts in his wallet, keeps them there in order so that he can match them back up to his credit card bill in order. He has everything in little boxes in his desk drawers - neat is an understatement. I am neat and organized, but he puts everyone to shame.
