Had a fabulous trip recently on the Crystal Symphony Pyramids to Pompeii. I have a six page soup to nuts review that I will be happy to email to anyone interested in more details. The short and sweet summary is:

Outstanding food, superior entertainment, top notch guest lecturers(4 on our cruise), and an incredible amount of daily activities particularly exceptional during sea days. We enjoyed all of our sea days of which we had 7, and normally my husband cannot handle 1. The ship flowed quite well with a number of great common areas including a coffee/tea bistro similar to Starbucks. This was definitely one of our better cruises.

Crystal has some very interesting and unique itineraries that could provide alternative cruise experiences.

Concerns are smaller standard cabins(size of the Paul Gauguin), charge for alcoholic beverages, and assigned seating but we found ways around the assigned seating that worked for us.

The 2008 Crystal Cruise Atlas is available and we will be happy to assist you with your Crystal reservations. Ngaire is still strictly focused on Regent and if you have an interest will ask one of us to assist you with Crystal.

I had the opportunity to read Susan's review yesterday, and it was excellent - full of details, which I love!!! Thanks again, Susan! Sounds like you had a wonderful time. We would consider Crystal for the right itinerary & price.

We cruised Crystal Serenity in May, 2005, Athens - Venice and loved everything about the trip. They had deluxe shore excursions, outstanding shore lecturers & superb food. We do not drink so that was not a problem. They provide soft drinks & water in your room refrigerator & water on shore excursions.

We were therefore looking forward to our Crystal Serenity cruise last March, Dubai - Istanbul. On this trip we noticed how loud & crowded the breakafast & lunch buffets were. The speakers had nothing to do with the historic ports we were visiting & even though we asked for a table for 2 in the dining room they assigned us to a table of 10. As soon as we boarded I went to see the Food Manager & he graciously gave us a "floating" table for two. So for several nights we would sit at different tables for 2 until we got our assigned table for two. The alternate dining is nothing more than the pool deck snack menu.

What Crystal has over Regent is a beautiful well stocked library with lounge chairs & aa very large selection of DVDs. Great music & exercise programs. They also have a Catholic priest & protestant minister on all sailings so I was able to go to daily mass. We were sailing during Holy Week in biblical areas so this made the trip very meaningful to me. They have a large dedicated movie lounge where they show recent movies every night & on sea day afternoons. We met same nice people as sail Regent. They have a great bistro but Regent has not got something like that on its ships. Crystal does serve Mighty Leaf tea in all dining areas which to me is the finest tea.

We are finished with Crystal & will sail strictly Regent in future. The dining room & tiny cabins is the deal breaker.

Interesting post Jackie. Although Crystal has some great itineraries, we would not choose to cruise that line because of the dining room. That seems to be a deal breaker for alot of us!

Cheers, Pam

Susan, I'm glad you enjoyed your first Crystal cruise. I am about to go on my 5th Crystal cruise and really love the whole experience. I know that the cabin sizes and assigned seating in the main dining room are deal breakers for some people. We always have great tablemates and enjoy the open seating in the specialty restaurants. However, I wish Crystal had similar cabins to Regent. I hope to experience Regent one of these days. It's hard when you can only do one big great cruise per year. I guess if we started with Regent we'd be doing Regent exclusively.

I'd love to read your review. You can email it to nlproler@sbcglobal.net.

Nancy

PS. Isn't great that we all have such wonderful choices.

Jackie, I'm not sure when you say the alternate dining is nothing more than a pool deck snack menu. the specialty restaurants that serve dinner are terrific. One is an Asian restaurant and the other, Prego, is a terrific Italian restaurant. The Asian Restaurant on the Symphony is called Jade Garden and Wolfgang Puck designed the menu and recipies. The Asian restaurant on the Serenity, Silk Roads, is affiliated with the Nobu Restaurant Group. It also has a seperate Sushi Bar.

I believe there is casual dining by the pool on selected evening but I've never have eaten there for dinner. Perhaps that is what Jackie is referring to.

Nancy, yes I meant to say the only casual dining alternative was the pool snack bar in the evening. The speciality restaurants were wonderful & easy to get into even for a second visit. We enjoy Regent's casual dining alternative, LaVerandah very much & were expecting this on Crystal.

Even with our table for 2 we found the noise in the main dining rooom deafening. On our first Crystal cruise we had a table of 6 but one couple never showed up which made for hard conversation as the 4 of us were all sitting next to each other in a row. The other couple was very nice & we saw them on some shore excursions but they were missing many nights as we were also going to the speciality restaurants. Plus, there were two evening shore excursions that had special early dinner serice for those going.

I believe we were so happy with our first Crystal cruise as we had only sailed the Mariner once as our other Regent cruises up to that time had been PG & Explorer II. So we were not as aware of the differences the first time. When we went in March of this year, we had sailed Regent 5 times & the contrast was "crystal" clear.

Susan,

We are doing the Transatlantic Cross from Dover to NY. There are 5 great ports and 8 sea days! The most consecutive number of sea days are three. This cruise is a film and theatre theme with a fabulous lineup of lecturers. I've never been on we have been on 11 and 12 day Crystal cruises with 2 to 3 sea days so I'm really excited to relax and enjoy all the great things going on during the sea days.

Thanks for your great review! It is very balanced and extremely detailed. Again, I'm so glad you had a wonderful experience.

The only thing that isn't included is Alcoholic beverages and my TA prepays the gratuties and I think most do. Hence, I don't feel like I'm signing for everything. All-inclusive would also work for me!

Nancy - as you know we very much enjoyed our Crystal cruise in 2006. The signing just wasn't an issue, nor was the fixed seating, at least not for us - but then we did luck out and have a great table, and we ate at the alternatives a couple of times each, so it worked well.

Have a wonderful time - as I know you will. Are you doing the TA that gets back to Miami on Nov 19th? I had some clients very interested in that one, but then one of the couples kids got pregnant and they wouldn't go and miss that, so the other couple opted out as well, since they usually travel together.

Nancy, have you ever done an analysis of the pricing between Regent and Crystal? While I don't like signing for alcohol, if that's all there is, it wouldn't be a problem for me. But I always thought Crystal was so much more expensive for a similar "standard" cabin on Regent. Way back when, what bothered me was the dinner sitting times being set, and so I never booked. But with Regent now not allowing smoking on the balconies, I am "looking around". Especially if I am a solo traveler, I hear Crystal may be more accommodating to them? I would not have a problem with the "people" part of set dining times, just the timing part of it. Could never be ready at 6-6:30.

JoAnne, we are doing the Transatlantic crossing on August 31st from Dover and finish in Ny on September 14th.

Olivia, I think if you really compared the cost of an equivalent cabin, really apples to apples, Crystal could be higher but not positive. We haven't had a balcony cabin on our last few itineraries because the weather didn't warrant it. The lowest category cabins on Regent, except for PG are much larger than the standard cabins on Crystal. You would have to have the lowest category Penthouse category to compete with the Voyager's smallest cabins. The price of the Crystal penthouse smallest suite is outrageous. We don't spend lots of time in our cabin so we're very happy with what Crystal offers. The standard cabins are really nice. The single supplement on the non-penthouse cabins is quite attractive. In regards to dinner, we always have late seating (8:30) and have had wonderful tablemates. We request a table for 8 in the dining room. The specialty restaurants as well as breakfast and lunch in the dining room are open seating. Crystal can't accomdate open seating in the dining room during dinner due to the size of the dining room vs. the number of passengers. I'm sure at some point the smoking policy will change on Crystal. Forgot to mention that I find the alcohol pricing to be very fair. I feel you're paying for this one way or another, either upfront or not.

If we had tried Regent first or the other luxury lines, I wouldn't be writing about Crystal.

Hope this helps. I'm glad to hear that Susan will be able to assist with Crystal if anyone is interested in Crystal

Nancy

PS. Joanna/Betty, thanks for your kind words

Hi all,

I thought I would chime in since my family and I have gone on 7 Crystal cruises vs. 4 on Regent. However, of the last 4 cruises we went on, 3 were on Regent, so you can understand why my travel agent asked if we had given up on Crystal. We do love Crystal but there are several advantages that Regent offers - open dining, all-inclusive, much larger rooms - that keep us coming back. I think one of the other things that is related to the all-inclusive is that the Regent ships are just more fun. Not to say that alcohol is necessary to have fun, but not having to sign does make it easier to join groups and have a drink, etc. We had a great time on the recent Regent Norway cruise, and we stayed up later than we ever have! Contrast that to the message I read on the Crystal board where apparently the CD was imploring people to attend the evening shows - it seems that only 35 people showed up to the show the evening before. So Crystal spends all tha that money on those "Broadway shows" but then no one attends. In fact, we had seen them so many times, on our last cruise, we just didn't go either.

Another thing that is becoming a deal breaker to me on Crystal is that they charge full price for a child after 12 years old. So, there we are in the relatively small stateroom and having to pay full minimum fare for our daughter who is 12. On Regent it is 50% unless in a named suite.

Another positive for us for Regent is the new non-smoking policy. Smoke just really bothers us and so we are happy to see the change.

I did run the numbers comparing Regent and Crystal for the recent Norway cruise. It was almost exactly the same money, so with the larger stateroom on Regent and all-inclusive, I cancelled Crystal and went with Regent.

We will go back to Crystal someday I am sure, but I would like to see them go all-inclusive and do something about the 3rd passenger charge.

On our cruise the shows were very well attended and the casino and disco were still going after the shows. We loved the way the ship flowed and the number of activities. I understand about the cabin and dining concerns. We just spend very little time in our cabin and we learned how to work around fixed dining. Late dining really allowed us to stay as long as we wanted and with a table for 2 at dinner we could join new-found friends at breakfast, lunch or in the alternative dining restaurant venues. The beauty of several quality luxury cruise lines is that you have options to choose from.

Hi, yes, I apologize for going too far with the comparison when the original thread was about the wonderful cruise you just had on the Symphony. And I absolutely agree that Crystal is a great cruise line and we will definitely consider them as a definite choice because of:

the fabulous service - I really have not seen any better than on Crystal
the Bistro - I just love to get my coffeee to sip and read there - several times a day
the Theatre
the great promenade all around the ship
the excellent lectures
the huge fitness center
the absolutely to die for teas
Prego and the Sushi Bar!

Yes, we are very lucky to have several luxury lines to choose from!

Best, NJBelle

NJBelle,
No need to apologize for your comparison. It is great to have an open forum where you can voice your opinion and I think most will respect you for your candor. What is important to me might not be to you and vice versa, but that's what makes it fun to explore and see what fits the individual needs. I truly value all that each line offers and enjoy having variety. Each person has to make their own decision based on their specific desires. Great to see another sushi lover. I personally like the sushi on Oceania.

I'm afraid that I'm am aligned with those who are not willing to be told when and with whom they will dine. Crystal is not on my scope.

jhp,

You are going to have to do a lot of looking around to find a cruise line that will allow you to smoke on a balcony these days..

Okay billp1, what lines with balconies other than Oceania and soon Regent disallow this policy? I really would like to know, as, can't find any, and would appreciate your back-up to that. Although perhaps many lines are headed in this direction, I don't know of any other lines now with this policy (that I am interested in crusing). I know RCL recently announced no smoking in cabins, but allowed on balconies. I never smoke in my cabin, and am a VERY careful smoker when I go onto the balcony, don't smoke when my neighbors are out there if it bothers them.

By the way, Nancy, thank you for your most thoughtful answers to my questions! You are always so informative about Crystal, sort of our "board expert"!

Maybe billp1 knows something we don't. I can only find this which indicates ONLY Oceania and Regent don't allow smoking on the balcony.

Thanks Olivia! since I only know Crystal that's what I know! I'm glad to hear that Susan can book Crystal for B & K clients!!!! Again, if I can answer anything for you, feel free to email me and do my best to help!

PS. I suspect that smoking will become more restrictive on Crystal over time. They have altered the smoking policy since last year in some public areas but they haven't changed the policy regarding cabins and balconies. Finally, from my experience, the shows are very well attended. I'm sure that there are isolated cases!

Nancy,
I do think you are right about all cruise lines taking a look at smoking. It seems to be the hot topic presently. As we all know so many cities have banned smoking in office buildings, restaurants, and bars. It is interesting that ships that cater to diverse guests have strict smoking restrictions. Guess we will have to wait and see if policies change.

Susan,

The only place I have a problem with smoking on Crystal is in the Avenue Saloon. I'm an ex-smoker who cheats once in a while and the smoke in that room really gets to me. There has been a big discussion about this on the Crystal CC board. Most of the Crystal smokers agree that smoking should not be allowed in the Avenue Saloon. The room next door is a great place to smoke, particularly for pipes and cigars.

There is a re-statement of the Crystal smoking policy over on the CC board for Regent. It's interesting that Crystal re-stated at this time. Susan; please send me a Crystal brochure. For us it's going to be either Silversea or Crystal. It looks like we'd need to get a Cat PH on Crystal to have comparable digs to Regent and that's definitely more expensive than Regent. Also, Susan, please e-mail me your soup to nuts briefing at dougburns1@cox.net or else just put a copy in with the Crystal brochure. Thanks!

Doug, there isn't a current restatment of Crystal's smoking policy. The policy changed last year and it was a very minor change. Crystal hasn't allowed smoking in any of the dining venues in several years. Hope this clears things up!

The statement is dated 15 July. What I really care about is that I can smoke on my balcony and in open air areas around the ship. Probably will choose Silversea over Crystal, because we don't like nickel and diming and fixed seating dining. Silversea is more like Regent.

Doug, FYI, the poster on the Regent CC board thread got his info from NCL not Crystal. Please go back over to CC and see what I posted. I gave the info straight from Crystal's website. Regardless of which line you choose I know you will pick the one that best suits your needs. Aren't we lucky to be able to cruise on such wonderful luxury lines. Since Silversea is all-inclusive, you might like that better. Since Silversea's ships are smaller, you will find the ships similiar to Silversea. I know that Susan will help you figure out what is best for you and Lynn.

Susan, you're very welcome. Doug, Susan's review is outstanding! My upcoming Crystal cruise has 8 sea days out of 14 and Crystal really shines on sea days. Since their ships are larger than the other luxury lines, they can offer more. IN addition, there have never been any lines as Susan mentioned. My husband often would comment "where are all the passengers"? Good luck with whatever line you choose. YOu would love dancing on Crystal!

Nancy
