Thanks Ngaire & Julie for your efforts.
We're up in the air and prefer to go somewhere that has non stops. We've never been to Warsaw, appreciate other's opinions if that could be another option? We absolutely love Switzerland and there's non-stops from AMS to Zurich. There's also non-stops to Geneva, an area we're not as familiar with. There's always Rome, Paris, Marseille to fall back on as well. We spent a week in both Prague and Vienna years ago so not as high on our list.
There's always just going straight to Budapest...decisions, decisions.

Ngaire - I think if you put in a 2020 date for the same cruise, you can see the 3 night Prague post cruise package, which i would guess would not basically change. I looked at it at one point way back when this first started, so for those who think they might be interested that would be a start for info on the tour, hotel, price etc. Just a suggestion We plan on going to Budepest three nights early and since the Marriott was mentioned by several including you will probably stay there once dates open.

Darn it anyway. Think I will look around and see if I can find a company. By the way to drive it is approx. 870 miles and 14:24 hours to get there. So if we had a tour bus it would be about 174 miles per day. And closer we arrive to Budapest would be places we will see on the river cruise.

Marcie, if you have not already been to Auschwitz, I would recommend Krakow. We spent a four day weekend there while we lived in Brussels. We also did a four day weekend in Berlin which was also great.

Prague I did recommend. But from Amsterdam to Prague there is no non stop flights. Usually offered from Regensburg or Vilshofen. Great post trip for the Danube cruise. Crystal is just offering the Prague 3 night and the Vienna 2 night land trips right now. That is all I can find. Rest is just hotels.
As Marcie mentions there are so many choices of places to go in Europe. To just pick a city that offers a lot of choices of things to do in the city and on the outskirts. Ken and I have another time frame of 5 days between trips in September so we will be doing this 5 nights in Europe fill in twice next year.
There are non stop flights from Amsterdam to both Warsaw and Krakow and also non stops from both cities to Budapest.

Yesterday somehow when Ken was checking all the flights for me I asked him about nonstop Amsterdam to Prague and Prague to Budapest I thought he said NO non-stop flights. BUT THERE ARE nonstop flights from both Amsterdam to Prague and Prague to Budapest. This is what i would HIGHLY recommend if you have not been to Prague.
You do NOT need a tour company at all. Just book your flights and the hotel of your choice. Just be sure you are in the main area of the town. Most of this is walking in the town and the hotels can arrange trips outside of town if there is anything you want to do.
This is a beautiful city and very easy to keep busy. We did a pre-cruise on AMA and did our own thing the entire time.

Since we have spent time in Prague, and with non-stop flights from Amsterdam to Krakow and Krakow to Budapest, Tom and I have decided to spend our fill-in days in Krakow.

Marcie, that is wonderful. I wish I could find the name of the little hotel we stayed at; it was next door to another place that served an original Jewish meal. Krakow is the birthplace of the bagel so you need to try them while you are there.
JoAnn, we will also be spending three (or four) nights in Budapest (will check on Marriott but might end up in Hilton). One day we are going to get a guide and driver to take us to Kisvarda to see where my family is from. One day we would like to get a driver/guide to take us to Bratislava since it has been dropped off the cruise; would you be interested/ We are doing the Jewish heritage tour via the boat so the day in Budapest we ant to see Parliament Hall and the other sites; would you be interested in getting a guide with us? That will probably be the day we are boarding the boat.
It feels good to finally be planning travel again.

Marc - We booked the Jewish Synagogue/shoes on the river tour for Sunday thru the boat. As for getting a guide, I know Jack and Laura are coming one or two days early, but none of us have done air yet and they have been there before. I think we may just do our own thing, I walk slowly and carefully these days and as of now anyway, find it hard to stand for long stretches, walk fast, and such, still some residual with the hip and prefer to be able to stop and rest or sit when I need to, so I think I would be a detriment. But, lets plan some dinners in the evenings for sure and we were thinking of some sort of a food and walking tour if I can find one that I could handle, maybe to the Great Hall Market.......I will keep you in the loop on my research. Also we just aren't in to long tours anymore, try to stay within 3 - 4 hours, and again I have to consider the amount of walking.

Well we booked some great air yesterday after searching all our options to get from DFW to AMS. Even looking at going via Canada as AA was sky high with miles. Using the points from our Chase Sapphire card we got United Business Class from Houston to Amsterdam for 60,000 points. Such a short flight from DFW to IAH to connect. Plus United has a new seat a POLARIS seat that looks great. Felt really good to make an air booking and get a good deal. Brightened our day!!

It is the credit card that you use - Chase Sapphire Reserve.
Login to your account - go to Ultimate Rewards / Travel / Flights and fill in what you are looking for IAH to AMS and date. It is booked right there on the Chase website. I have never done it but seen Ken do it often. There are so many different airlines you can use best thing we ever did was to change to that credit card. 3 miles for a $ on travel and dining expenses. But the big thing is all the airlines you can use. This is how we flew Korean and SIngapore airlines.
A ton of our clients have this card now great if you travel.

I am probably wrong but thought the way to do the kind of booking Ken did to AMS on United was to create a United Account , check what the miles required are , then transfer the miles from Chase to the United account and then book the flights on United using the miles in the account.

The difference Ralph is if you transfer the points to the airline and then book with miles, you don’t get credit for the miles travelled because the airline shows that as a free ticket. But if you book via the credit cards site using points, you do get credit for the miles you travel because the airline shows that as a paid ticket. At least that has been my experience ————————- Helen

Just to clear up how I found flights with the Chase Sapphire Reserve credit card from DFW-IAH-AMS: I have a United Airlines account. I did an award search to see availability for DFW to AMS, which was not in their system for the date I wanted but checked a date where it was in the system and it was a good flight for us. United wanted 60,000 points and $5.60 taxes for a one-way Business Saver award flight. When it was available which was two or three days ago I went to the Chase travel portal and I transferred 120,000 Chase Ultimate Reward points to United and snagged 2 business class tickets. The points transfer only took a minute or two. We will not earn miles miles for the flights. With the business saver award the shorter flight is usually in coach, but in our case Dallas to Houston is only an hour flight. I could have booked these flights on the Chase portal but it would have cost me 556,900 points per person which is a $8,353.50 per ticket if you were to buy them. Chase actually buys the ticket from United, which means you would earn miles for the flights, but transferring the points to United for an award was a much better value. There are 3 Chase cards that earn Chase Ultimate Rewards points. Here is a link that may explain the process a little better than I did. https://millionmilesecrets.com/guides/chase-transfer-partners/

All, thanks for the info. I just checked United site for AUS - BUD for a week before we want to go (our dates still not available); tickets were only 66,000 per person; this is a lot cheaper than I have seen on Delta. Flight from AUS - IAH (just half hour) was in coach but still included two free checked bags. I guess I will be volunteering to fly UA for the first time since they stranded me in 1979.
Marc
PS Ralph, welcome back to USA!

Thank you Marc. It is great to be back in the Good Old USA. LAX was like I had never seen it. Very strange. Taxing to gate you could see most gates had no airplanes. When at the gate and got off there just was us and the few people that were on the Air New Zealand flight. The flight was at best about 40% full. We got to immigration and because June has a "green Card " that you can not put in the machine we went direct to a person. No waiting just walked right up. Process took no time and then we were on our way to baggage claim. When got to the bag claim area our bags were already on the belt going around . We arrived about 2pm and I think we were in the car and going out of parking, my brother picked us up, and on our way home. Unbelievable.
Now the process of getting over the jet lag is in process. Takes us a day or two these days. Was really great to see my son and his family once we got to Ladera.
Looking forward to the Alaska cruise in September but difficult to see how that will go.

Just to muddle the decision a bit more, I factor in the miles I am losing by getting my ticket with miles. For instance because of premium class booking I get double miles. So flying down under in Biz gets me about 60k miles. I have platinum status with Delta which gets me an additional 9 miles per dollar spent so about another 9000 miles. If I use a delta branded Amex card I get double points. So you need to figure it’s going to cost x miles to get an award ticket but in doing it that way I am losing the almost 70 k miles I would have earned. It’s all very complicated n’est pas? Kinda fun tho when you score a great deal. ———————- Helen

Long time ago I started calling Ken the "air & hotel department" wise decision on my part. It is so complex he spends endless hours figuring all this out. He gives me a couple of options and we decide which is best. I think I would pull my hair out trying to negotiate all of the angles to find the best option. Plus so many issues to consider as Helen points out. He is VERY GOOD at it though and always seems to come up with great options. He also worries about the seats that makes a big difference. Same airline - different planes have very different seats. We always seem to have a free hotel night or use points - I just am glad it is not my responsibility.
I really am missing flying I have never minded it at all. When I get on a plane I relax, have my traditional mimosa and look forward to hours of no phones, videos, naps and pure relaxation. Good thing since I normally have to fly so much. The next time I get on a plane to go to a cruise ship I will not be able to contain my enthusiasm.

Just booked our one way Tul-AMS flight on AA with miles, 57.5 k each. Not sure why Ngaire was getting such high prices for hers, but I think it may be how you do it. If you just go to the AA site, and select book with miles from the main page, it gives you ridiculous prices. You have to select advanced search, which takes you to a different page, then put in your request there. And it gives normal prices.

When we booked the United flights American was not out yet on our dates. But the flights with AA miles showing were going through London where taxes can be high. With United we had a "sure thing" lower taxes and the new Polaris seats that Ken wants to try, They are showing the 57.5K now but we are excited about trying United.
Happy you got good flights.

HELP!! Would someone please give me some ideas of where to stay in Munich after our cruise? Plan is to stay in Munich May 1st. Do a tourist thing May 2nd and fly back home May 3rd. Looked at Hilton properties and other than the Hampton Inn gave me a sticker shock so now open to suggestions.

I looked at using points at Hilton Garden Inn and it said they would not be excepted for those dates. And the Hampton Inn West was Way out there in price, and points. Can book Hampton Inn East and Hampton Inn Airport and prices are OK but probably far from things. May not matter since we want to plan a private tour anyway. Like Tours By Local. Will be 1st time to the area.
9:05 pm Tim just sent me a suggestion. Anyone know Jahreszeiten Kempinski Muachen - Munich ??

Some hotels may not have added next May to their booking calendar yet, but May 1st is a national holiday which is another reason you may not be seeing point availability.
We stayed at the Louis Hotel last fall, near Marienplatz and the Viktualienmarkt. Just checked and they have spring special rates at a 20% discount.

Well I am not having any luck getting a biz saver award to Budapest on United or Star Alliance except using Air Lingus or Air Canada and two stops and not arriving in BUD until evening. I can't find anything with one stop such as FRA or MUC........very frustrating. And of course can't even look at return yet. I am also seeing the Budapest Marriott SOLD OUT, but I think they just haven't opened availability for the dates I want yet.

Wow, guess we're lagging behind. We haven't even booked flights to Amsterdam (we're B2B). We have a new precious little kitten that's a LOT more fun than booking flights.

I am trying to add a picture of Marcie's new baby but Photobucket is not working yet again! When they fix the account, I will try again.

JoAnn, we named her "Amy" in honor and remembrance of our famous "Amos" that we lost last week at age 17+

Marcie's new baby Amy (I pulled this off her Facebook page since Karen is having problems with Photobucket).

Thank you so much for posting this Cindy.
Amy is adorable, sweet personality and VERY active. She LOVES Charlie & Daisy. Daisy is especially fascinated by her and has become her surrogate Mom. After losing our Amos, it's been a great diversion and new focus having our newest little family member ❤️
