We are going to MP after the Galapagos on the SS Explorer. My husband is a photographer. We understand only a carryon and a personal item are allowed on the Hiram Bingham train. How do we deal with the excess weight and tripod/monopod for his equipment? Also, how do you handle purchases you might make at the market? This is my first time posting and I hope this is appropriate. Thanks for your advice in advance

All that cruise luggage can be stored at your hotel in Cusco or the Sacred Valley depending on where you are staying. You do not say if you are staying overnight or doing a day trip?

We went on the Hiram Bingham train a few years back. They provided bags that were NOT big and that was all you could take so it is a problem. They have relaxed some now and you can take your own bags, but still I imagine they will be fairly strict. None of the Machu Picchu trains allow much luggage. Probably in the range of10lbs per person and a personal item. A tripod could be a personal item. In reality most are either "day trippers" or spending 1 or 2 nights at Machu Picchu. So in reality you do NOT need much at all and definitely do not need anything nice - it is all very very casual. Limit your toiletries take very small bottles or jars saves a TON of weight.

If overnight LIMIT your clothing and take more camera stuff is all I can suggest.

You will enjoy your trip I am sure I wish you lots of sunshine and no rain!!

Thank you for your advice. We are staying 2 nights in Sacred Valley, 3 nights in Machu Picchu and 2 nights in Cusco. We are taking the Vistadome to MP and the Hiram Bingham from MP. I appreciate your response.

Good plan. You will enjoy the Sacred Valley that most people miss.

Good to know that most people miss the Sacred Valley. I'm going to insist that we go there. Why is that so btw? Is it dangerous reaching it or something?

Easy to get there over a mountain with a very good road. Plus lower altitude so you adapt to the altitude. Everyone just races to Machu Picchu that is the thing everyone wants to see. Unless someone tells them about the Sacred Valley they don’t really know. Personally I think it is a shame not to visit this area on the way to Machu Picchu.

This website covers the highlights. The salt plains are worth seeing.
