OMG that is sooooo cute! And I agree, Tony would love it.
I just hope maybe they get some rain in the next month, I've been reading on CC about a drought this year and low water levels, itinerary changes and cancellations as a result.

I bet Tony and Joanna are having a good laugh over the "Heidi" pin. It's definitely one of my favorites ever!

JoAnn, that doesn't sound like good news at all. Do you have any specific details? Please keep us posted!

Kathy - there are two or three threads on CC, specific to Crystal you can read. Also a couple of threads regarding Rhine water levels. That is the only info I know. They are under the "River Cruising" subject, right below the section where Regent is.

Yes it is a bit of a worry but I checked the weather forecast and rain is predicted in the next 10 days. See below. It does not take much rain to make a dfference to the water levels so hopefully since have about a month to go all will be well.

Not sure that link is working so just copy and paste into your computer

We're on the Rhine now and you can tell from the discoloration on the shoreline that the river is several feet below normal. One lock was just left open because there was no depth change. So far no rain yet. There is a problem with the depth so barges are sailing with light loads. The width is affected so they have to stay in the correct channels and traffic can get backed up. Part of our cruise is on the Moselle which is OK because they have a series of several locks and can hold water back. We're still expected to make it to Basel on schedule.

Al had two business associates here the last few days who are from Germany. This drought has been terrible for businesses that rely on transferring material on barges. Many barges have been unable to get down the Rhine to their destinations and have had to turn around and go back due to shallow water. As Jim said, they have had no rain yet, although they keep predicting it will come.

Per cruise critic, AMA Waterways has come up with any interesting solution. Ships heading down the Rhine are docking before they get to the shallow areas. Ships heading in the other direction are doing the same. They are then having passengers switch boats after being transferred by busses. The crews are staying with their respective boats. There have also been cruises cancelled with about one week's notice. Either way this is not a good situation, especially with non-refundable air and pre-paid hotels.

We were told that Viking has been doing the same bus switch with identical ships so everyone has the same cabin on both ships. Those are on cruises going to Budapest. So far our Uniworld cruise is still scheduled to make it to Basel.

Was printing out our excursions and just in case some new or different excursion came up, I looked at each day.....and I saw that the "Private Canal Ride", both the afternoon and evening one has now gone up to 219 euros per person......that is just plain crazy! And a couple of the Michelin Dining experiences have also gone up from 298euros to 349 I think it was. You won't be seeing us on those. laugh

I'm getting sooooo excited for our RHINE river cruise !! It seems perfect for us and we're so looking forward to it.

I think we'll be ready for something nice and easy after spending 6 BUSY days & nights in NYC pre-cruise on the go catching up with pizza, family, friends, and Broadway shows.

The Rhine is still very low. The heat wave seems to be over and they are predicting rain in the south where the rivers originate. We've had some rain but only enough to annoy us for 1/2 hour on a walking tour.

Agree Marcie, I too am getting really excited for this. Something different, small group, small ship, and a whole new area for us. And, it sounds like things are starting to improve along the Rivers....so fingers crossed by the time we board there will be no issues.

There has been rain in Switzerland so things are looking up for you. Beware that the heat wave is now over and morning temperatures are in the low 50s (Fahrenheit, not Celsius) and this week the highs were around 70, so bring jackets and layer for the temperature changes. Koblenz & Speyer are 2 really special cities that you will visit.

Global Entry has gotten easier. It's been a while since we flew back and last night in Orlando we only had to let the machine take our photo and the form came out with name & flight number. Didn't need to put in passport, finger press or click any answers. Glad the Government has done something to make things easier.

Wow Jim - I hope they are rolling this out everywhere! My poor husband always has trouble with the fingerprints - the machines just do not like his fingers! And half the time the passport reader says it can't read my passport. This will be GREAT!

I am too short for the picture. Usually just my eyes and above. Hope they get enough of me to make that work. Sounds great though.

This will be my first river boat cruise, so that aspect is new to me. 😊
Wishing you all a great two weeks and see you soon in Amsterdam. If anyone plays backgammon, I’m bringing a travel game. 😊Best wishes from Cheri ( and Jill)😊

Marc, are you sure it's “Rhinos”? I thought I was going to wish a bon voyage to the
“Rhine-golds”? Anyone else remember Miss Rheingold (beer) contest? 😀 Safe travels to all either way!

OMG Helen. I remember the Miss Reingold contest....too funny.
We leave Thursday, getting really excited. The ship left Basel today on its way to Amsterdam. There is a link on CC that you can track it. Fingers crossed the water levels cooperate and we will get our full itinerary. Sounds like Danube is having more problems right now.

Helen, as we are using the English spelling (Rhine) instead of German spelling (Rhein) I thought Rhinos (or Rhine-os) made sense. Of course, it could be just winos. loopy

Packed today all ready to go. Did not set up all my dinners in advance this time. This will be more relaxed and we can find each other easily. Only 106 onboard. Looking forward to it. Last time I was there I had the best lunch ever :::::: looking for a repeat of that experience.

See you all soon.

Ngaire, I was just checking the Crystal Cruises site so I can follow your cruise when I found this page:

www.crystalcruises.com/debussy/celebration-of-the-onion/

It looks likes your cruise is a celebration of the onion promising wonderful onion based recipes throughout the journey.

Marc, I don't know how you did this, but it is one of the funniest things I have ever seen on LCT. I would guess you made Ngaire's heart stop for a minute. Mine sure did! Good job!

We're sitting in the Dellta lounge in Detroit waiting for our flight to Amsterdam. The reports from the Rhine River are not good. The water levels are still extremely low and most cruises cannot travel south of Strasbourg. They are sending people south by bus. Al talked to his friend in Dusseldorf. They are no longer using barges and have started shipping material by truck. Personally I think it's really poor that there has been no communication from Crystal. If I hd wanted a bus tour I would have booked it.

We went quite a bit past Strasbourg on Uniworld 2 1/2 weeks ago and the river had started to rise. Our ship had a shallow draft and could go further than the Viking & Ama ships. I heard that Crystal ships had a deeper draft, but that was maybe speculation. Good luck. By the way, Strasbourg is wonderful and the food excellent.
