Marcie -

Kathy and Al are on this too. At least from her post on the GONDOLA roll call they are.

Also, Jack's sister and brother in law, Jim and Jill are on as well, they will be on starting in Auckland. Can't remember their cabin right now, but will let you know.

Hi everyone. Mona and I are also booked on this cruise. We booked it on Grand Prix and I have just been negligent in posting on the roll call.

We had to take a G gty so we don't yet have a room assignment. It will be so great to see everyone again.

Tom.

Started working on air today, semi happy with what AA could get, and it was very little to say the least, I was surprised since I started calling them the first day. Have emailed Ben at Pointspros to see what he might be able to do.

Tom and I have been looking at hotels, have it narrowed down to three possibilities. What is everyone else thinking? Open to ideas. We plan on arriving on March 3, since its our first and maybe only time there, want a couple of days to see Hong Kong.

I booked us using AA ff. miles on a non-stop from LAX to HK on Cathay Pacific arriving morning of March 4th. We've been to HK a couple of times and not sure where we'll stay since we've always slept on the Voyager before. Most likely will try to use points for those 2 hotel nights.

We may stay near Ocean Terminal Port of HK where Regent docks (about 40 minutes from the airport).

Tom wants to get some trousers made, anyone know a good cheap tailor?

Did you get First or biz Marcie. I am having a hell of a time with AA and some agents seem more knowledgeable than others. And it can't be booked online so I'm told. Did you use one of the points guys or do it yourself?

We sort of have our hotel narrowed down to either the Hyatt Regency Kowloon, Kowloon Shangri La or the IC Grand Stanford, which is the Regent hotel for our cabin category but we will take the credit and book our own, just waiting to see what one we all decide on.

Does the ship dock on the Kowloon side, or Hong Kong Island?

Sticking my nose in: The Peninsula HK is a fabulous hotel that everyone should stay at at least once. We stayed there after a Regent cruise in 2007(Mariner?). The cruise ended in HK and we were able to walk to the Peninsula from the dock. The cruise terminal was attached to a big shopping mall. Also the Pen has a fleet of Rolls Royces and we were able to have one drive us to the airport for $100 USD!! All in all, a wonderful experience.

Thanks for the suggestion Helen, will check it out, but we may find that it is above our budget for three nights......would of course love to stay there.

forgot to answer you JoAnn....I booked it myself. I knew Cathay Pacific Biz Class was our best option so jumped on it the day the flights opened.

well we too have Cathay biz class, and I'm sure it will be great, those new seats look wonderful. I had to wait, knew that Cathay had opened flights about a week before, but we had to wait until AA opened theirs so we could get the connection out to LA at the same time.

Problem is I can't get the 10pm flight on March 1 to arrive on the morning of the 3rd, so at the moment we are booked on the 1135am flight on March 2 and will arrive around 7:30pm on March 3. But......its not that bad actually all in all. We arrive in LA on the 1st and will overnight, so at least we will have a bit of an adjustment to the time difference.

How are you getting back to LA once the date opens and you can book? I don't see any Cathay flights. I do see AA to ORD, then for us on to DCA, and if going to LA, then still connecting in ORD. Flight time is horrible 655am. Ugh.

You'll be on the earlier flight JoAnn and we're on the 10:15 pm flight. I made a reservation using Starwood points at the Hong Kong "W" for 2 nights but will likely make more reservations and then sort through and decide where we'll stay and cancel others.

We (maybe all of us) have a Regent complimentary hotel night on March 21st in Beijing at Sofitel Wanda hotel. We've been to Beijing so may or may not do a post stay. Last time we flew to Chengdu to see the Pandas, now that was fabulous!

We have the three night post tour, Great Wall, all that stuff, so fly home on the 24th, again, decided that while we are there might as well see all that we can, and Frank said Great Wall was a must!!!.

I envy the ability to book OW award flights. Booking Star Alliance flights through US Air necessitates booking RT (open jaw) flights, although 90,000 miles for RT business class is a pretty good deal. So I have to wait for about 10 days until I can book award flights. Asiana's new business class seats have gotten excellent reviews and there appears to be plenty of award availability. The downside is that the flights go through Seoul so we might get nuked. wink

I'm also trying to figure out what to do after the cruise ends. We're signed up for the three-day excursion in Beijing. Is anyone else doing this excursion? I'm also looking into private tours as an alternative.

Not scary JoAnn, it is a toboggan you just sit in and go down the open metal chute at the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall. You just sit, don't even have to steer. It is the fun way to come down the hill.

I booked our return flight from Tianjin today (we're not staying in Beijing this trip). We fly home on Asiana via Seoul, Biz/First Class- lay flat pod seats with only 1hr30min layover. I got the UAL super saver rate of 60,000 f.f. miles each.

We're on a non-stop Cathay Pacific to Hong Kong.

This is ALWAYS a good feeling to have the RT booked with good flights.

We fly out to LA on the 1st and then non stop to Hong Kong Cathay biz class on the 2nd, arriving in Hong Kong the evening of the 2nd. Haven't looked at retrun yet, but guess its time to start checking it out. Will be nice to have that out of the way for sure.

I don't know how you did that Marcie, the lady I talked to at UA today was an idiot, and I kept saying well can you offer any other alternatives, and she kept saying no award seats are available, and I asked about their partners and she just didn't even hear me. Apparently its 70,000 miles for biz they are telling me. How you got it for 60,000 is amazing. AA doesn't open that date till later this week.

JoAnn,

I'd keep calling United until you get an agent who isn't an idiot. I just checked and there are award seats available on March 24th when our three-day Beijing excursion ends. Here are the Star Alliance flights with at least two award seats on that date. OZ = Asiana, NH = ANA and CA = Air China International:

Thanks Dave, not sure I completely undersdtand this, but is it saying 1Y award/upgrade? We would need two. Also, we need to fly to Washington DC, preferably IAD, although we can do DCA if need be. Going out IAD/DFW/LaX on AA, then Cathay Pacific to HKG. Using AA awards. We have UA, but not sure we have enough for two biz seats, would have to transfer and buy some miles, which we are not unwilling to do, or we could use AA back from Beijing via ORD to DCA and can't check that until a few days from now, and I'm not crazy about the flight departure of 6:55am from Beijing, but......if thats what we deal with thats what we deal with. It seems there are seats to LAX and I don't have an issue going thru LAX. Ideally would love to get the non stop from Beijing to IAD on UA but was told there were no seats.

How do you find all this stuff? Its obviously wayyyyyy above my feabile brain!!! loopy

JoAnn, We changed our return flight after posting that (you can call airline and do it within 24 hours of booking). Our return flight is now in First Class (they have 3 classes of service) from Tianjin on Asiana on a 747 using 70,000 miles. Our original flight was on an aircraft 777-200ER with two classes of service Biz/First using 60,000 miles.

I booked the first available day on line not with an agent. I had anticipated needing UAL miles for PAGODA months ago so got another UAL Chase credit card that had good promotion going.

Thanks Marcie. I will look at it again, but we need to figure something out for miles, as we are a little short of 70,000 per person, although buying and transfering miles might be a cheaper combination than buying a coach ticket and trying to use miles to upgrade.

Its obviously wayyyyyy above my feabile brain!!! loopy

JoAnn,

I was using a web application called ExpertFlyer.com. Sorry for the confusion. All the flights listed had at least two business class award seats available. The symbol "I" is not the number one but is a capital "i," the code for a business class award. The "Y" means yes, there are two business class award seats available on that flight.

I assumed you wanted to go through LA on your return. I checked Star Alliance flights to IAD on March 24th and found ANA flights that might work for you. There were two business class award seats available on ANA 906, leaving Beijing at 2:50 pm and arriving at NRT (Narita, Tokyo) at 7:15 pm. You would have to spend the night at NRT and then fly nonstop the next day from NRT to IAD on ANA 2 (you won't run into any stopover problems because stops of less than 24 hours on international flights are not considered stopovers), leaving at 11:10 am on March 25th and arriving at 10:40 am the same day. (Love flying east across the international dateline. :-))

I'll be happy to check other airlines for you. Hope this helps.

Thanks Dave for the explanation and the possibilities. We don't need to fly thru LAX, and as I said we may need to use AA points which I think would be Japan Air, Cathay Pacific and or AA, prefer not, but if it gets us home then will bite the bullet so to speak.

So if wanting to book this online how do I do it, or do I have to call UA if we wanted one of these? or of course Ben at Points Pros could probably help. Have to do some thinking about adding to our miles first.

JoAnn,

To book the ANA flight online, go to the United Mileage Plus website and sign in. In the "Use award miles" section, click on "Book award travel now." Fill in the details requested and click "Search." One of the choices will be for ANA 906/2. Business class saver awards are 60,000 miles per person. You can select that award and book it. Note: the search results also show another ANA flight to Tokyo but I didn't mention it because it goes to a different Tokyo airport.

Hope this helps.

P.S. I'll see what I can find for One World flights for which you can use AA miles.

Finally got our return. We decided against the AA flight thru Chicago, just could not deal with the 6:55am flight and the oneworld options were pretty much non existent. Did some miles transfer and using UA at 11:30am thru Frankfurt connecting to UA to IAD. Have an alert set if biz seats come up on the UA non stop.

Glad to have that done and out of the way. Working the hotel in Hong Kong and tours should be easy after that. smiles If anyone has good suggestions for tour operators in Hong Kong, would be interested.

I just booked our pre-cruise room in Hong Kong for 2 nights at the Intercontinental Hong Kong (there's 2 - we're on Salisbury Rd.). It worked out great because we have 1 night for our annual Free night stay for 2014 (we're using the 2013 free stay night in Istanbul in Oct.) and the 2nd night we redeemed Priority Club points.

I LOVE A GOOD SCORE and I think this is great considering the outrageous prices in Hong Kong.
