Hi everyone,
I just got a quote from a transportation company, American Star from DFW - Westin Hotel in Frisco, TX - - one way $60 plus $5 toll. Any one in Texas familiar with this company ?
We are arriving at 940 A.M. on AA Flight 861 on Friday the 19th. Any one coming in around that time ??
Looking forward to seeing everyone.
Rod and Cynthia .

Cynthia--I'm not familiar with this company, but the price seems pretty good. We've always used X-Quizit ( www.xquizit.com), but it looks like their rates may be a little higher for this trip.

Just a thought - if you have a company that you know is good (by experience or recommendations), and another (not known) offers a better deal... why not ask the known company if it will match or better the deal from the other company? Sometimes, you may be surprised. And it costs, what? a phone call?

Penny was checking on things for Hee Haw and tells me that:
1 - Internet daily charge is $12.95 for wifi and $14.95 for high speed.
2 - Rental car...Thrifty tells us car does not come free with a transponder to keep track of any tolls accruing and if one is wanted , it would cost $10.49 per day for the transponder. If you don't have the transponder, you pay the toll cost plus $15 per incident.
As info.

AS an SPG Goldmember which I believe a bunch of you are that have the Plat Amex that you use for shipboard credits, you can choose your amenity at check in at the Westin, one is Free in room internet.
I would get the transponder, we didn't last time and got Three $25 tickets going through the tolls because they DO NOT take Cash, which is illegal by the way.. Thrifty never advised me that I would need one. Never will use them again...

Ray,
I just checked the Hertz website and if you're an AAA member and use PC#135892, you can get a three-day rental of a midsize car for a total of about $100 including all taxes, fees and the daily charge for use of the Plate Pass Transponder.

It seems that Hertz has something called PlatePass that carries a $2.95/day fee + actual tolls. Perhaps this is better than some, but still a beat to the traveler.
Doug
PS: thanks to all. I never would have known about this if not for this board!

Whoa, called Hertz and it worked! Owe you a beer on that one!
Did get the rate with transponder, Penny or I can drive and I get points with SWA. Life is mighty good!!!
Frank: I remember your ordeal from HoDown and that's why I wrote up my findings. Thanks to you too!!! I don't qualify for free internet as I don't have a tier level except maybe "coal." ; > )
Cheers! Ray

For those of us without the toll transponder thingie, is there a cash lane to drive through like there is here in Houston if you don't have a redi pass on your windshield?

Karen: according to the web site... we have to contact the toll people & give them lots of info including credit cards & the license plates of the cars. Of course, we won't know the rental car plates until we arrive...so, I am not sure how to deal with this. I plan to make some calls Monday & will let everyone know my results. (Not a lot of hope here)

This is the craziest thing I have ever heard! If you have never been to Dallas before, how would you know you can't pay the tolls!?!?!

There are ways to get around without using the toll roads but inconvenient and takes a bit longer. Basic outline get a map and get more details. Lots of construction at the aiport as well so watch carefully.
Airport North exit to 635 east (LBJ) follow that to MIDWAY road (guess approximately 8 - 10 miles) go north on Midway Road probably another 10 miles. Then turn left on Corporate, then left on Legacy and that runs into the Stonebriar area you cant miss the hotel and all the Stonebriar signs.
Driving into Dallas you will probably be on 635 or coming up North 75 (Central Expressway) from the down town area that is not a toll way either. Then take 635 west until you reach Midway Road and turn North and follow the same directions.
Construction all over the place on 75 and 635 so remain patient. Old GPS may give wrong directions due to the construction just watch for signs for these main NON TOLL highways.
Can't give you explicit directions and this is really sketchy and I never use this route but it WILL get you there. DONT USE THESE DIRECTIONS I am terrible at directions but this will be a guide and a good map should get you there pretty easily.
Remember 635 (LBJ) and 75 (central expressway) are NON TOLL roads and MIDWAY is a normal four lane road this is the same road from ALOFT to my house when you were at Hee Haw.
Personally that is what I would do and avoid the toll roads completely.
