This is something to keep in mind for future air travel to South Africa. Delta is dropping its Cape Town to Atlanta via Dakar route according to a news story here: http://tr.im/owVD

Saving grace, they are still going between JNB and Atlanta, and ROAR people who safari would be returning home from there anyway. The three times I have been there, have had to fly extra flight on SAA from JNB to CPT one way. Would have been nice to arrive with the trip over, though.

We aren't planning to do a Cape Town segment anyway, so it won't affect us. I'm sorry that happened, though, it was convenient for those who wanted Cape Town. I was just afraid to get off the plane in Dakar in the middle of the night.

Pam, getting out in Dakar was crazy, wasn't it?! We had to do that on the way home from ROAR 2 and it just seemed a bit ridiculous. Our plane from JNB parked on the tarmac and we walked down the gangway. We could literally see the other plane but we had to get in a bus and go to the terminal. We were herded into the building, walked through a maze, and then right out the building and back onto the bus that took us to the other plane! Huh?!

It certainly didn't help that it was the middle of the night and Len and I were both half asleep.

I wonder when Continental will become part of Star Alliance? I think it's later this year. That may open up award ticket options on SAA for ROAR 3.

I've never had to get off the plane in Dakar that I remember! (twice on Delta, once on SAA). But they sent all these "official types" (read make-work) on the plane to pull up the seat cushions and inspect the overheads.

Editing to say SAA is already part of Star Alliance. Unfortunately when I flew them, they only gave 1/2 credit for the miles.

Olivia, Andrea and Len switched planes on the way home. Do you remember them getting off the plane when we landed in Dakar? They went on to NYC and we went to Atlanta.

Now I do! I guess I was half asleep! SAA did the same thing when I flew them. Except some were going to IAD, and some to NYC. I never had to do it.
