If you rented a car for HO DOWN and did not get an automated toll tag, here are the instructions we received from National as to how to pay the tolls on the unmanned roads (Highways 121 and 161). I am quoting verbatim:

if you used an unmanned video toll road (hwy 121 or hwy 161) during your rental, please contact the ntta customer service department for your toll invoice. Please allow 3-7 business days for the invoice to be processed. Failure to contact NTTA will result in violation fees in addition to your toll charges:

North Texas Tollway Authority (NTTA)

972-818-NTTA www.ntta.org

Note: you will need the rental dates and the rental car's liense plate/state to access toll charges.

End of verbatim

I tried the phone number .. constant busy signal. I then tried the website, choosing the 'contact us' for the customer service center. I will keep you posted on how this progresses. The check-in agent at National said they will charge something like a $1 convenience fee plus the actual toll per toll charge; if one does not pay the invoice, then they will pursue violations and much steeper fines (heard $20 per violation but don't quote me on that).

Other side of card (presumably for those who rented the toll tag device from the rental agency):

TOLL PASS INVOICE

Contact the HTA (Highway Toll Administration) for your Toll tag invoice for expense reporting purposes at:

www.htallc.com/national
www.htallc.com/alamo
Phone 1-866-673-7985

For any invoice/billing questions for actual tolls charged, contact HTA directly.

End of verbatim

Cheers, Anne

I'm going to look really dumb, were there toll baskets on those roads? The only toll road that we *knew* of driving was that main Tollway. I wasn't watching once, and Mark got in the TollTag only lane. We stopped, held up traffic, I banged on the window of the booth beside us and tried to give the guy $1. He said no, just to go on. We may or may not get an invoice, I guess.

We only drove on 121, Pam. There were no toll booths - just overhead toll tag readers. I suggest you contact the HTA and ask for the invoice to minimize any extra fees or violation fines.

Cheers, Anne

Oh. We did have toll booths on our drive, every few miles, for $1.35 or $1.40 or $.90. We were on Tollway North, or whatever it was (remember, we were driving to Plano from Love Field, not DFW).

For those who rented from Hertz, I just checked and there is no need to do anything. A charge from Plate Pass for tolls will appear on your credit card account in a few days.

Thanks, Dave. That's what I thought and am glad you confirmed it. The first couple of times we stopped at the toll boths and paid cash. Then I noticed the sticker in the windshield that said the car had Plate Pass and charges would go on our credit card. So, we decided not to stop and pay anymore.

We get so confused with this. When we were at Ngaire's last party, we saw the toll signs on 121 (there is nowhere to deposit coins) and figured we'd get a bill in the mail, that they took a picture of our plate, maybe, and then would send a bill to the registered driver. Never happened.

Locals who know: are we going to be billed? I just don't want to get arrested someday because we didn't pay a few dollars in tolls!

Our car had Virginia plates on it, and I didn't see anything about Plate Pass. But if it hits our CC, that's okay too.

Should be interesting (or very $$$) since we rode all the way to Ft. Worth and back to Plano and on George W. Bush tollway and NEVER paid a single toll. We just kept driving since we weren't sure of what to do.

National sure didn't mention any of this to us and we paid tolls both coming and going. We used Emerald Isle though, so we walked right out to the cars and got in one and were off, didn't have to wait in the check in line. It did seem that the guy at the airport toll road charged us double, it took us less than 8 minutes between the pick up ticket toll and the pay ticket toll, which according to the sign there should have been $1.00, and he charges us $2.00 which was 8-30 minutes, but Frank just decided not to deal with it.

I find it curious that the rental car companies don't mention this toll thing at all - like JoAnn we just walked to the car at Avis and took off, but you'd think that there would be a note with your contract in the car?

When we went through the airport toll booth both ways the attendant told us we didn't owe anything at all.

Well thats what I thought would happen too Leslie, and at worst we would be charged the $1.00. It took him forever to process our ticket, who knows, maybe he kept it for himself, that did go thru my mind, he could be running a scam of some sort, but I try not to think like that. I just think he just didn't know what he was doing and somehow processed it wrong. Oh well.....whats done is done.

We rented from Hertz and it wasn't until we were headed to the airport that we noticed that on the windshield we had an automated toll tag so we just whizzed right by the collection booth.

Prior to Monday's drive to the airport, we paid cash for the tolls but I think only once, maybe twice. No big deal. However, Hertz should have told us about the automated toll tag.

Cheers! Ray

Whew....glad we're not going to "toll jail" but I agree, Hertz et al should be telling customers what they need to know because the system is confusing.

There is a very simple solution to this dilemma-if anyone who attended Ho-Down goes to toll jail in Dallas, we must all agree to plan and attend Ho-DownII to visit them! ;)

It just showed up on our Amex bill online, even though we went through and threw money into the baskets. Interesting.

We got our bill from NTTA in the mail the other day, so that solves our mystery! Being in Fort Worth, we don't get over to Dallas all that often. They must wait until you've accumulated so much in tolls to make it worth them sending you a bill.

The bill included both trips to Ngaire's (from her party earlier this year and also Hodown). They had a neat little picture of our license plate right on the bill. Good for us who are local, but not good for those renting cars, like you, Pam. :( There is a phone number if you want to dispute/explain what happened - 972-818-6882 - www.ntta.org

Kristin, it was something like $8. Not worth arguing about, at all.
But thanks.

Yeah, I figured as much. It just stinks that they can "get away" with that.

What a confusing situation and in my opinion just Crazy!!!! Got a charge on my Amex for $78 extra which is I guess tolls.. We went from airport to to the Aloft one time to Ngaire's office which I believe did go on the tollway, not on the way back and then back to the airport. Using the access roads as much as possible.. These toll booths dont take cash according to Thrifty rent acar which is illegal by the way... How confusing to tourists... Even in crazy Massachusetts which extorts you at every chance they can for money, at least you have to slow down and pay the tolls or you can go through a fast lane.. At least you have a chance to pay and not just keep going like nothing is wrong and get a bill for $25 per infraction... Terrible system in my opinion..... This is why I usually never rent cars...

Wow, $8 to $78 that is a big difference. I wonder if the rental car companies add to the charges and this varies by rental car companies.

Living in Dallas with a tolltag I was totally unaware that this was an issue. The tolls are automatically charged to my card once it reaches a certain amount $100 (I think) never even give the toll tags a thought.

The rental car companies approach it differently. For example, Hertz offers a plate pass with every rental at no additional cost for the service; they simply bill for the tolls accumulated (I did not check if there was an extra service fee on that one). National charges $2.50/day or $10/week for the automatic toll payment.

BTW, Colorado has gone the same way with their E470 road outside of the Denver airport. No toll collectors.

The rental companies can and should alert renters BEFORE they leave the airport to this situation. It's regrettable they didn't in Dallas.

Cheers, Anne

Wow - we got an additional charge of about $8 on our Amex - rented from Avis. I would protest that charge, Frank!

I am disputing the fine portion only... actually charge is $3 in tolls which makes sense and $75 in fines.. a Joke.. I remember Debbie in Ngaires office telling me her son blew threw a bunch a tolls at $25 a pop and she got a bill for like $400 or something.... If this is such an issue they should have the Transponders in all rental cars and just charge a little premium for them... The good news is the trip was a blast and Things happen I guess...... Happy Holidays!!!!

Ours just started coming in from Enterprise. We've received 3 within the past 5 days but luckily the total is under $20. Something tells me more are on their way.

We, so far, have $4.44 in tolls and $10 fee from National - Marcie Tony thinks since you and Tom covered half the state of TX trying to find hotel your charges ought to be higher! :D :D :D

No charges from Hertz yet. We were paying the tolls at first. Then we realized the car had a toll tag so we decided to just drive though.

The charge will not come from Hertz. We had two charges for tolls that came from "wwwplatepasscom."

Thrifty is the worst ever!!!!

I asked for a tolltag and they said I did not need one because I was going to Plano!!!!

$100 in fines a month later... this is why I take taxis, no stress and no surprises...
