Now that I actually see what I will be doing, it looks scary!

"Climbing Shoes, Helmet, Harness and Tasty Snack are provided."

Let's hope that tasty snack is a shot of Jagermeister.

If I get a choice, I'll take a shot of Grey Goose vodka or Patron Reposado tequila. :)

Hey, as long as we're tied off, the worst that could happen is ... we fall off and dangle there? It'll be OK!

Oh boy - no repelling for me - I'd probably throw up while they were strapping me in and then I'd crash into the whatever on the other end, probably have to be medivaced off the ship and never be the same again!! You guys go for it, we'll watch the videos! :app: :app: :app: Hopefully watching the videos won't make me throw up!!!

Since we booked the "White Pass Rail" in Skagway that Joanna is referring to above, we are interested in any past Alaska cruisers reply's as well.

Looks like we're going to do the Crab feast in Ketchikan. Tom likes the idea of the flight on the float plane, eating Dungeness Crab and drinking wine all rolled into one excursion! I let him decide on this one, sounds good to me too.

When we were in Sitka we did this underwater tour http://www.sealifediscoverytours.com/

It was really fascinating. There is so much life in those waters. Don't know if Regent offers it but it would be easy enough to do on your own. The boat leaves from a spot very close to the tender dock.

I think the tour lasts around an hour, so you'd have time to check out the town too.

The rock climbing thing in Skagway looks interesting, not sure I'm brave enough for it. I've already done the train....so maybe.

We did the White Pass last time. I will pull some of the photos and post htem when I get home. Very reklaxing and scenic. RSSC has their own cars. The seats reverse so you always are looking in the direction the train is moving. There is a platform where you can go outside to take photos.

In Sitka, the wildlife and sea otter trip was very popular. We liked the town enough to see the Russian Dancers, St Michaels on our own.

In Skagway, we are planning to rent a car and drive to Emerald Lake in the Yukon. There's been lots of posts on CC about this drive. We got a great rate on the rental through Avis.

In August 2004, we did the Wildlife and Sea Otter Quest in Sitka and still had plenty of time to walk around the town, including visiting the Russian Orthodox priest residence, which is run by the Park Service and is somewhat interesting. The Sea Otter Quest excursion was very good. Strangely enough, I think the name of the boat was the Saint Eugene. As I've mentioned before, in addition to lots of otters, we saw more whales on this excursion than we did with Captain Larry in Juneau. The guide on the Sitka boat also was very informative.

Regarding the White Pass rail, it was funny because a bunch of passengers from another ship got on our Radisson train car and were asked to leave. When they had arrived the noise level and hyperactivity increased dramatically. After they left, we had loads of room and a very pleasant experience. (Only problem we had was haziness from nearby forest fires, which I don't think is a problem this year--at least so far.)

Lauri, don't worry, you can hang out with me on the easy climb! Then if we get brave, we can attempt one of the more difficult climbs.

Does anyone know IF the Tracy Arm excursion is offered how long it takes? I ask as we have booked Capt Larry in the afternoon - I am not interested in TA but Tony would love to do it - also debating between crab feast or Misty Fjord trip and can't determine which trip offers the best "viewing?" Joanna, the June 21 itinerary says that the catamaran does not return to Juneau until 1:15, and not to book another tour until 1:45. It is six hours long, and a hearty snack is served (I guess that's "lunch")

Thanks Olivia - boy that makes for a long day and I'll guess it is COLD - seems like Tony could get back in time to make Capt Larry's office by 2:30 pm - Karen the negative about booking the private flights is their cancellation policy - if you cancel 30 days out you lose full fare (illness etc) - I would think if you book on Regent you can still change your mind without penalty 24 hrs before trip?

Joanna,

We did both Tracy Arm and Capt. Larry (albeit 3:30) last summer, returning from the former right about 1:15. I think Tony would still have time for lunch on the ship, as the "hearty snack" wasn't quite enough. They had pastries in the AM and very good 1/2 sandwiches which disappeared very quickly! Thoroughly enjoyed both excursions and yes, it was cold at Tracy Arm (July 23!)

Because of the long day, we pre-plannned dinner in our suite which we enjoyed. I told our waiter the previous evening and he had the menus delivered that AM.

Thanks Kathy! It does sound like a long day - I am going to pass on the TA excursion. Tony will have to decide if he can get up at the crack of dawn and go all day - he'll never agree to eating in our cabin but, I agree, that makes the most sense!!!

Wait, don't we not get into Juneau until around noon or so??? Thought we'd be cruising Tracy Arm on our way to Juneau during the morning. Am I missing something here? Thought we just had enough time once docked to get to the Captain Larry's office an check in for the Whale watching tour. Am I in the wrong port??? LOL - that would be so me!!

JoAnn, we cruise Tracy Arm in the ship in the a.m. on our way to Juneau. It is spectacular whether you are on the ship or (apparently) on the catamaran! Ship gets into port at Juneau at 1:00. Cat gets in at 1:15. Since it is my 3rd cruise to Alaska, I am hoping to get off the ship for a little closer look IF they have the excursion. They won't know until late July, because of ice issues. It will be great no matter what vessel you are on! My first time, we did Tracy Arm in the afternoon during "chocoholic tea". Next time, it was at 7-10 a.m. My son, second cruise called me at 7 a.m. from up on deck and said "You gotta get up! This is AWESOME!" We were blessed with a warm and sunny morning. Next to Hubbard Glacier, this is a highlight of the cruise from the ship.

Just back from Alaska. Still too tired to write much other than " Was Fantastic" since I saw the questions about Tracy Arm, thought I would post a quick message. If you have a chance, do the Tracy Arm Catamaran. Leaves early. We were within 1/4 mile of Sawyer and the the trip the before us were closer. Not a fair trade-off though we had Days in the 80's and no rain, and they had bad weather all week. It was beautiful.
If you are doing the catamaran, do not book anything too early. We booked the Taku Lodge Floatplane listed as P.M. We got off at Juneau at 1:30 and it left at 2:45 wiil post more later , Phone is ringing off the hook.

Ketchikan Question? A friend asked if they could do the Misty Fjords seaplane excursion in the morning (2 hrs) and get back in time to do seaplane to crab feast that afternoon? I told her to call Regent but said I thought it would work as most AM excursions seem to leave at 8-9 AM and afternoon trip 1 PM? Joanna

Here's a link to a review that includes some information about the rock climbing. It's about a third of the way down the page. Sounds like mosquito repellent is needed.

oh-oh, mosquitoes just love to bite me. I'll be sure to wear repellant.

It kind of concerns me that there is minimal instruction. I don't know much about rock climbing. Perhaps I need to hit the local rock climbing gym before I go.

Does anyone know which excursions are sold out and which have availability? We want to fly to see bears in Ketchican and do flight and dog sledding in juneau if possible. Or another port if not in juneau. I have always sent my excursion requests into Radisson the first day you could to ensure our choices. Now, I wonder if it is a waste of time to fill out the forms.

thanks,

Just booked the scenic train in Skagway (in addition to previously booked "bears and whales").

Will be waiting back at the ship for my roommate with Bactine and fun band-aids.
