Pat & I are leaving tomorrow for Athens for 4 days of touring before boarding the Navigator. We're using Stelios for one long day of touring. We look forward to seeing Jan & Fred and Beth & Crystal (LCTers) and Martha & Steve and Jan & Harry (B&K clients who should really be LCT) at the Grand Bretagne the night before boarding. It looks as if we're all doing our seperate blogs, which we'll post links for, so maybe we should limit our postings on this thread to text. When photos are included it can take several minutes to load on the ship, but we'll all have photos with the blogs. We look forward to those of you joining in Mumbai & Cape Town and especially on the Game safari.

Pat & Jim,

Do have a safe trip and enjoy Athens. I concur about posting photos here, maybe a group shot or two. Most of my photos will be on my blog. Looking forward to meeting all the LCTers, B&K folks, GAMErs et al.

I will be leaving home on Sunday to spend the day with my mom before I fly out on Monday.

Beth,

I've checked out your blog and bookmarked it. Is there a way to subscribe so that whenever you post I receive an alert so that I don't miss anything? Note: In reading your blog I got so excited you'd think that was a picture of my luggage packed and ready to go! Which, by the way, I'm so impressed with your packing efficiency.

Looking forward to following your adventures and meeting up with you along the way.

Pat & I arrived in Athens Sunday morning as did our luggage. Yesterday (Monday) we had Stelios who was recommended by Ngaire. What a treat he is. We spent from 9am until 5pm with him ann saw far more than any bus tour could provide. I highly recommend him for anyone wanting a day of excellent touring. We've had some supurb Greek food and today we move from the Marriott to the Grand Bretagne, plan to explore the Plaka and look forward to meeting everyone tonight.

Navigator is in beautiful shape and the staff is even more friendly than we remembered!

Had a very smooth sail from Athens to Rhodes. Not docked in best spot...I think they will have to use shuttle bus but it is a sunny morning and a grand start to our Discovery Collection trip.

Already have met Beth, Crystal, Jim, Pat and many more and are enjoying everyone's company.

There is a glitch in our Petra plans as the ship has been assigned the second convoy through the Suez so we will not even arrive in Aqaba until late evening. We don't know yet what that means for the overnight trip we had signed up for to Petra. I think we will probably have to miss Wadi Rum but they will let us know soon.

We'll still enjoy Petra however!

It's a real pleasure to be on the Navigator again after a 5 year absence. The ship is in excellent shape, the new deck chairs & lounges are great, the staff is wonderful and we're looking forward to the next 71 days. There are 84 doing the full cruise and I know at least 60 of them so it's quite a reunion. It's 9:15am in Rhodes and the ship isn't cleared yet. Since we sail at noon it'll be quite a short visit.

We've just sailed from Rhodes, and are now en route to Alexandria. The Suez problem that Jan mentions is affecting Beth and my overnight to Cairo as well as the as-yet-unclear impact on the Wadi Rum/Petra trip. Since the ship won't be reaching Suez until 11:00 pm, they have to entertain those of us on the overnight for longer than originally planned. The good news is that we get some additional activities: a lunch cruise on the Nile, some Cairo city time, and a sound and light show at the pyramids. The bad news is we hit the pyramids in the afternoon (the heat of the day and the height of the crowds) rather than morning. I'm sure it will still be wonderful.

We're still waiting to hear what the impact on Wadi Rum and Petra will be.

As our new friends mention above, the ship is in wonderful shape, and the staff are, I think, more on their toes than ever. We had a little problem with water this afternoon, but that seems to be resolved now.

I know there's a lot of interest in what's going on with Portofino's. Right now it is operating as an Italian restaurant (without the music, etc. it appears). In a few days, it will convert to an "Arabian nights" theme. I would suppose that's not permanent; just done to fit in with where we're currently cruising.

So far, a delightful trip. The Grand Bretagne was great--particularly the rooftop bar. We no sooner walked in than we recognized Jan and Fred, and before long Jim and Pat joined us as we all watched the sunset over the Acropolis. Regent hustled us out of Athens early on Wednesday to beat a general strike and demonstration planned to start at 11:00, and much to our delight our rooms were ready when we arrived on the ship at 11:00.

It's been a great trip so far.

So wonderful to hear from you all. We will be on that rooftop bar at the Grand Bretagne in a couple of weeks and we CANNOT WAIT! Just have to "suffer through" a Voyager cruise first.

I am glad that Regent had the foresight to get you onto the ship before the strike/demonstration. Bravo, Regent!!!

We arrived in Alexandria, Egypt around 7:00am to a bright sunny day. A large portion of the guests (including Beth & Crystal) took either a full day or an overnight trip to Cairo and the Pyramids. We had been to Cairo previously so we stayed local and took a 3 hour tour of Roman Alexandria. The tour included the underground catacombs, a Roman amphitheater and Pompey’s Pillar. There were only about 12 of us on the tour, but there was security guy with us who looked like a secret service agent, wearing a brown suit and sunglasses. There are armed guards all around the city and the archaeological places have their own police force. After lunch on the ship we took the shuttle bus back into the city and walked around. We were constantly hounded by offers of taxi or horse & carriage tours. They have a hard time understanding the concept of “NO!”

What made this stop memorable for us is that, since Egypt is on the African continent, Pat & I have set foot on all 7 continents in 11 months, all while travelling on Regent.

Gossip from the Navigator!!!
Singing in the Portofino is gone. The restaurant will change venue twice each segment to reflect the countries we'll visit. Next week will be Arabian Nights and some of the future styles will be Indian, African, Brazilian, Mexican etc. Reservations are required and they have staggered seating times to have about only 25 guests being served the main coures at a time.

Capt Jarle, on vacation, aparently had a motorcycle accident which broke one ankle and some toes on the other foot so Capr McNeill may be with us longer than originally planned.

Jim that is good news about Portofino. That sounds like a great plan. It was time for a change up there and this sounds perfect. Sorry to hear about Jarle, hopefully he will be back when we board. We have been buds with him since the Song of Flower days. Captain McNeill is delightful too, both are wonderful.

Keep up the news - love hearing from you.

We also had a good day in Alexandia. We got a private guide (from the ship) so we could walk at our own pace. And it really worked for us. We went to Pompei's Pillar, the catacombs, the roman ruins (theatre and baths), the gardens and palaces and the fort...all in 4 hours. But it wasn't rushed and we spent enough time at all places.

We ate in Portfino's last night and did enjoy the atmosphere and the food. Looking forward to the changing themes as we continue the journey.

One thing has struck me so far about the staff...they are even friendlier than I remember! Most introduce themselves and make sure they know your name if they haven't met you before. There are smiles all around and the service has been fantastic. This is really a happy ship!

So far there is a good supply of fresh berries (bluberry, raspberry, strawberry, black berry & lingonberry) that we'll try to leave a few for Ngaire when she boards. This morning (Sunday) there was a self serve caviar station in the portofino and overall the food has been excellent. Last night a group of us had pre ordered fois gras as an appetizer and, instead of the ususal one slice, they brought a platter full so we each had 5 or 6 slices each. It was heavenly. Time now for lunch where 8 of us will have beef tatare made for us at the table.
Our trivia team which includes 2 LCT and 2 other B&K clients have won trivia the last 3 days.

So far, this is all good news. I also love fresh berries and go on a hunt, myself. Great news. Also, I am glad to hear about the Portofinos rotating themes. Otherwise, there would not have been a lot of options for those on such a long voyage (especially those that never liked Portofinosto begin with).

I'm glad everyone is having a good time.

Jim, that is good news. Perhaps you should remind the proper person BEFORE the ship arrives in CPT that they might pay particular attention to reprovisioning BERRIES. There will be no opportunities past Namibia, and it's a long way to RIO. Since the Princess Ngaire will be aboard, and this group has learned all sorts of ways to go after berries on another line that Regent contracts, might just be best to stock up a lot of them! She doesn't like MWF schedule, or an only at breakfast/dinner schedule.

Loving your posts, and not surprised that you two are on the winning Trivia teams most days.

Berries, rack of lamb and dover sole I am ready for these wonderful treats. Who is the dining room manager? Best remind him as Olivia suggests to be sure there is plenty onboard - great thought Olivia.

YEAH for the trivia wins - LOVE to see LCT'ers excelling at trivia. Keep up the good work!

I bought a tee shirt in Africa with trivia in mind with all the things one needs to know. A dazzle of zebra, a leap of leopards, a raft of hippos --- any of these I will know in the future. Wont wear that shirt TO trivia though!

Oh, good Lordy, I hope Regent has learned the lesson about you TAB lovers, and stocked up before leaving the states! My dear friend Deb at home is in a constant quest for that beverage. I think it must be the caffeine.

Joanna, I have not even requested the Tab for December but should since it is only Caribbean. I am afraid of confusing them since hubby likes the Diet Coke/Coke Light. Never heard of Tab Zero, only Tab Energy. Never tried it. Don't want to.
