I am so excited. Marcia and I just signed up for 2009 Polar Bears! Who else intends to freeze with us?

Congratulations Diane.
Tom is reading the paperwork right now....guess we're on the fence right now. I'd love to go but not crazy about the $600 p.p. non-refundable deposit.....our plans change waaaaaay too often!

Adding: we're still trying to work out going to see the Pandas in China too......

Way to go, Dianne.

We're looking over the info, too. Like Marcie, it's the non-refundable deposit that is the stumbling block for us.

Diane when and what is Polar Bears? confused

We are sort of looking at the spring cruise to Reykjavik on Voyager in May 2009, but are on the fence about it until we know more of where our log house will be in the building process.

Diane - have a wonderful time! I'm filling the cold weather bucket with the ICE trip so polar bears is not on our radar screen.

We look forward to b-mail (for bear mail) and pictures.

Cheers, Anne

Anne, you and Gary should join us on the frozen tundra; it should be a wonderful trip. It is only three days of cold.

Marcie, I, too, am concerned about the non-refundable deposit; however, we really want to see the bears. We have a trip to China in the fall (get to see the pandas) that also has a $600 per person non-refundable deposit that I am concerned about. I just hope everything works out.

Susan, if we bought trip insurance now, would that cover the deposit? How expensive would be the trip insurance?

Sue--look up Polar Bears in a thread search. It is a 5 day excursion to see the bears in the frozen Canadian tundra. The pix on the thread are tremendous.

Our deposit is in the mail; actually, in the envelope for me to take to the post office in the morning. Any others joining up? I don't think it is all inclusive so I think this is a BYOB vacation; I'll bring the scotch, who is bringing the Sambuca or Ouzo?

Marc - I am delighted you and Arlene will realize your dream of seeing the polar bears. You were certainly a driving force in making this trip a reality. This makes my day.

Thanks, too, very much for the invitation. I do poorly in protracted cold weather. Gary? it's the old saying: when Momma isn't happy, there's no one happy.

Cheers, Anne

Going to get Karen to move this to the 2009 Escorted thread.

I HATE that non-refundable deposit aspect of this trip. I worked on this policy last year too and those who went had to put down the non-refundable deposit also. So I do understand the committment aspect this far out.

They were very adamant about this and I even tried to get them to agree to allow someone to take another persons space like I worked out with Ker & Downey. They would not do it.

I guess this is so popular and they sell out so far in advance they just do not need to be flexible.

I am going to send her this thread, doesnt hurt to point out what a stumbling block this is for people. Probably wont do any good but I can try.

It's the $600 p.p. non-refundable that is preventing us from signing up TODAY. There's just too much that can happen between now and then.

I can GUARANTEE you we will NOT be able to get away from the non-refundable deposit.

However, I am trying one more time to let her allow me to resell someones spot by handling the changes ourselves. All they have to do is a name change. This is how we could do it.

Marcie books and then has to cancel, the Andrea decides to go. We do a name change with the company and Andrea sends her deposit to Marcie. Marcie is refunded.

This would make it so simple for the company to handle, I have my fingers crossed. They will NOT issue refunds.

On ROAR with all the cancellations and rebooking EVERYONE got their money back if they cancelled. There is a $250 per person cancel fee with Ker & Downey. I was able to get a refund if someone took another persons place. It all worked out fine.

This is the best we can hope for in this case. Even K&D would not do a fully refundable booking.

IF and it is a big IF I can pull this off we will simply handle the refunding issues ourselves.

Her contract says, no refunds, no name changes but no harm in asking.

Anne- we must be opposites. Cold over hot for me anyday. The heat actually caused me to cancel the Black Sea lct cruise this summer. Just too hot. And a fall cruise was not in the cards this year.

SUCCESS --- she will allow a name change!!!

I actually called her rather than wait for a response to the email. Used all the charm I could muster! I told her I would not make any changes until the end so it would keep her administration down to a one time confirmation of names at final payment. To be a stickler over this with so little hassle for her I think she finally saw the light.

So it is STILL a non-refundable deposit BUT someone can take your spot. So if you book and deposit and then have to cancel the likelihood is that you will refunded.

Between now and November 2009 there will be a lot of changes in peoples plans I am sure. There are only 9 rooms total and it is such a neat trip that I bet we end up at the other end with a waiting list of people who want to go.

Ngaire, you are so good. You always come through. Still deciding here. I'm dealing with some heavy issues involving my very ill father which make it hard to look ahead to 2009.

If we commit, I'll look forward to finally meeting you, Diane.
