Happy Valentines Day! We’re at sea today and will be cruising Cape Horn (Southern most part of South America) later this afternoon on our way to Ushuaia, Argentina. Captain Philippe had warned us there might be some rough seas but so far, things remain smooth….knock on wood!

The past few days have been jam packed and so fun, so busy I haven’t had a chance to post. Night before last we had a BIG Penguin party in STARS lounge. It was all decorated in black and white (guest had been requested to wear black and white to dinner too). There was a huge ice sculpture of a penguin. There was a great turn out to the party and we danced and drank till the wee hours. We paid the price yesterday morning when we got up for our 7:30 excursion in Stanley, Falkland Islands to go to Sparrow Cove to see the penguins. This turned out to be one of the best excursions we’ve ever gone on. We tendered to shore then loaded into 4x4 vehicles. We travelled on rough grounds over hill and dale in what appears to be in the middle of nowhere (VERY baron) for about 30 minutes. Suddenly we crossed over a hill to a site I’ll never forget. HUNDREDS of penguins! We had arrived at Sparrow Cove where the penguins were. A BIG BIG WOW! There were 2 types of penguins …Gentoo and King. They were so cute and quite friendly. They didn’t seem to be afraid of us at all. We were instructed not to touch them (tough for me!) and to let them come to you. At one point I crouched down on my hands and knees hoping they would like me and come to me! It worked, one little Gentoo was so fascinated and came up very close checking me out (who is this crazy lady??) It was such a fun day. It was cool and quite windy but not that bad. We were back on the ship before lunch, ate, then headed over to Stanley the capital of Falkland Islands (population 2500). It was a very nice tiny town and you could easily walk it in about 30 minutes. The homes are all painted bright colors and the town is immaculate. Nice to be with all English speaking people but not great for buying anything other than souvenirs. It is VERY expensive because it is so remote (everything priced in UK pounds).. By this time the sun was shining bright and warm enough that a light sweater was all we needed. We were back on the ship in time for our 2:00pm poker game (Tom won yesterday…yea!)

BTW, the Celebrity Millennium was due in Stanley yesterday as well. Their Captain diverted though due to a forecast of high gale winds. (huh?). Too bad…..it was a gorgeous day. I feel sorry for the Millennium passengers who missed this port. Captain Philippe is the type of Captain that could hear “chance of high gale winds? This would be music to his ears…..”Full throttle ahead!” He is such a great Captain!!

Last night there was a great event….British Pub Night in the Horizon Lounge. The entire lounge was decorated to the hilt with balloons, banners, photos….even a fooze ball game. Brian O’Brien (cruise consultant) and CD John Barron mc’d. We did sing alongs and the Peter Grey singers and dancers performed. There were 2 parties….a 6:30pm pre-dinner for the Los Marineros (full SA cruisers) and then an after dinner party for everyone. It was such fun we went to both. The parties were SO WELL done and everyone is still raving about having such a good time. We ate dinner in CR with Doug and Lynn Burns and their fun friends, Warren and Judy (he’s the retired Delta pilot who tells non stop jokes).

Today is a much needed sea day so we can regroup. I think I’m ready to swear off Sambuca. Makes me too crazy! Tom surprised me this morning with such a wonderful Valentine’s gift. You may remember the beautiful necklace he gave me for our anniversary….well today he gave me the matching bracelet. I have no idea how he pulled all these H.Stearn purchases off without me knowing anything about it Apparently the bracelet was purchased a couple of weeks ago when we were still in Brazil when he pulled one of his famous disappearing acts that he is so good at. I took a picture of both that I’ll include….it’s so pretty!

Tonight my friend Joan organized a Valentine’s Day dinner for 30 of us in CR (guess we’re more into fun than romance!) at 5 tables next to each other. Should be a hoot!

My social life onboard continues to thrive. In fact I’m getting ready to go sign up for the crew vs. officers shuffleboard tournament. I don’t even know how to play so I’m sure I won’t make it past the first round. I seem to commit to things at night after too much Sambuca that sound GREAT at the time. The next morning I’m usually wondering why?? It will be fun. I need to find time to catch up on some way overdue laundry one of these days when there’s a lull in the action. Cool day today….a perfect “stay in jeans and sweatshirt, no make-up” day!

Here are some photos from yesterday. (I don’t know why they come different sizes?)

Marcie, what a great report! I love the penguins and the brightly colored houses!!

I watched the Celebrity Milleniums webcam for hours yesterday, waiting for the ship to pull into port and couldn't figure out why it never did. Now I know!!!

Your necklace and bracelet are to die for!! Way to go Tom!

Marcie,

Your posts and photos really bring the cruise alive. I love the pics of the penguins - thank you for posting them. And what a romantic your husband is. Fab jewelry - and with at least six different colours in, i reckon that means six new matching outfits......happy shopping!

Yeah, you got to see the King Penguins isnt that a fascinating sight. Something you will never forget I am sure. Seeing the pictures was fantastic. I figured Tom bought that bracelet that day we all went into town and walked around and left him. Sounds like a great social happening is continuing to build. Who is winning at poker!!!! I figured you must have been busy has you had not posted.

Now we’re in Ushuaia,,,the southern most city in the world!! It is really pretty here. This segment of our SA trip (segment 3 of 4) has had the most beautiful scenery of all, spectacular tall Andes mountains with glaciers. Ushuaia only has 8 full sunny days per year! We actually timed it right because most of our morning was sunny. The weather here changes so quickly….cloudy skies, bright sun, sprinkles, cloudy skies within minutes. Temperatures have been mild…about mid 50’s so we haven’t really needed all the heavy clothes we brought. We’ll be in Punta Arenas (Southern Chile) day after tomorrow so may need them there. I forgot to mention seeing all the icebergs in the middle of the Atlantic a couple of days ago. Really cool!!

Late yesterday afternoon we rounded the Horn of South America where the Pacific and Atlantic meet. The waves were so high, I can sure understand why so many early explorers capsized their boats going around it. It was definitely an E ride, but pretty fun. There was about one hour when things got pretty crazy but this paled in comparison to what we went through last year in the Bass Straits from New Zealand to Australia. The winds last night got wild….about 85mph I think. By dinner, everything had calmed down quite a bit. Luckily, I’m not aware of anyone getting sea sick, most of us just thought it was fun. Tom says Tony would have been in his glory taking pictures on deck 12 with him.

We had our big Valentines Dinner for about 25 of us last night in CR. A good friend from the WC, Joan, came early and decorated our tables with all sorts of red ribbons, streamers, gold wrapped candy for everyone, even had red rose petals sprinkled all over the tables. Joan is SO GOOD at this type of thing….she’s our resident party-giver who goes all out to make sure everything is just perfect! She’s so sweet….yesterday afternoon she surprised us with pitchers of Margaritas, chips and guacamole for all of us playing poker upstairs (she too is a regular player). She just walked in the computer room showing me her beautiful nail manicure she got in Ushuaia for $2 USD (included a cup of coffee!). She was so excited and said she “pulled a Marcie”!

The casino was closed last night as we were too close to the shore line so we (about 20 of us from our Valentine’s dinner) decided to have card games (Texas Hold’em and another fun game called “31”) upstairs in LaVeranda starboard side. This is normally closed at night but special arrangements were made to let us play cards up there. The staff has been SO WONDERFUL and always so accommodating! They arranged the tables perfectly for us, even loaded the place up with drinks! We had so much fun playing cards….a real party! About 11:30 we all were getting hungry so we called room service and ordered 5 pizzas delivered to LaVeranda which were immediately devoured!! We played cards until 1:00am, by then I was fading quickly. Tom won 2 of the 3 games of Texas Hold’em! The players mentioned how much they wish Ngaire could have been with us! She is missed in these poker games but always with us in spirit! Tom has been on a terror winning the poker games the past few days.

Got up early this morning for a brief city tour of Ushuaia, then on to a musical show about Charles Darwin’s voyage on the HMS Beagle and then on to a visit to a former prison (now turned into a museum). It really was a fun morning (even Tom enjoyed it and he’s very picky about which excursions he likes!).

Here’s a couple of photos taken today…..(need to take some people photos at night)

The only time I was in SA (other than islands) was back in 2003 when Ngaire carved out a very special mini-cruise for her clients that was only 6 days. I think it was my first time as her client~ (We traveled 25+ hours to get to and from) We ended in Ushuaia, where Marcie is now! Not sure whether Marcie remembers, but we had a "webcam" lunch at a local restaurant in Puerto Montt that was a real hit with this bunch, maybe on cc?, where she will be in a couple of days, after our private tour with a wonderful local gal. Somehow, when we got off the ship in the morning, there was a newspaper reporter there, who happened upon Lynn who was with us and spoke Spanish. She came to our luncheon that afternoon. We made front page news in the local section the next day for our cyberspace lunch! Todd has all these pictures on his site. http://www.kodakgallery.com/BrowsePhotos.jsp?&collid=99860962903.411304071103.1140055551919&

I wish we could have planned for Marcie and Tom to be there and have another cyber party!

Marcie, you are THE BEST, keeping us in tune with what you are doing! I'm loving all your posts!

Marcie, you are the best poster in the world - you truly have a knack for making us all feel like we are right there. Maybe you should start writing travel books or something!!! :D I'd buy a travel book written by you anyday of the year!
Can't wait for the next installment! :app: :app:

Thanks guys for your nice praise. I am having such a great time and just love to share it with you all since (sigh) you can't be here with us.

The scenery is magnificent. Huge glaciers, floating icebergs, awesome waterfalls. Our internet has been up and down and will continue to be intermittent for the next few days so I'm typing this as fast as I can knowing it will likely go down again any minute. The price we pay for such GORGEOUS scenery!!

We'd like to hook up with Patricia and go to the restaurant with the web cam for lunch too. We'll be in Puerto Montt on Feb.21st. I have no idea of the time difference here in Chile but maybe we can work it out. I've asked a huge favor of Olivia to please email Patricia to see if she's available for a 3-4 hour tour on this day. If she's available then maybe we can end up at the restaurant for lunch. I have no idea how many people her vehicle holds but we can easily round up 1 or 2 other couples to join us.

Played cards again last night till 12:30 in LaVeranda....such fun!! Terry Speak won. Also a musical whodonit mystery shows last night at 10:45 with John Barron. It was kind of a name that tune thing with a story line like....I saw the perpetrator drinking "Tequila" (name that tune part of the game) and recognized his "Greensleeves" and on and on. It was all so clever! Tom is VERY good at name that tune stuff and answered each one correct all by himself.

We won at trivia yesterday but there's been a lull in my Bingo games...maybe today! Still haven't gotten around to laundry (bad girl). I think Tom has decided to do it himself or it won't get done (smart man). Internet is so hit and miss….no time to proof read this…sorry!

I sure do remember that webcam lunch y'all had - and the front page story about it. It was the biggest thing to happen there since - well, since ever! smiles

I had an e-mail from Marcie this morning asking me to write to Patricia to see if she was free the day they are in Puerto Montt, February 21. Haven't had a reply yet from Patricia. We may have another cyber luncheon at Chilotito!!!

Marcie, if you can't arrange a tour, somewhere I have the name of the guy who owns that restaurant. He emailed me several times and if I dig through my emails, I bet I can contact him to arrange a webcam lunch!
