Joanna - please tell your friend I congratulate her. 35 lbs is a wonderful loss, and the fact it took her a year gives her a better chance of never gaining it back.

Olivia - thank you!! I was so happy to see you in Ft. Lauderdale, and your words made all my hard work worthwhile. Actually, I only started after MUSH. I only wish I had started after ROAR!! I guess the pictures of me from ROAR didn't have the same effect on me as the ones from MUSH. I look back at the ROAR photos now though and could kick myself for not getting inspired back then. There is a picture that Ray took when we were all standing in front of the Cape Grace getting ready to go to Rovos Rail - Ngaire looks like she is directing traffic, and it's on the ROAR dvd - I look HUGE, I mean, ridiculously huge. Never again!!

Andrea,

"Empty closet" is good! It's great to get rid of old stuff and start anew. I bet you'll have a great wardrobe by the time you go to FJORDS!

What kind of workout are you doing?

Joanna - I only wish I could delete those photos from Ray's dvd!! Oh well, at least I have some great "before" shots.

María, I go to the gym 5-6 days a week. Most days I do an hour of cardio - usually on the elliptical crosstrainer, but will mix it up a little by using the treadmill, bike and stepmill. In February I started seeing a trainer, and began strength training. We do weights, lunges, squats, work the core area, etc. I see her once or twice a week.

I think the biggest change for me is the fact that I love to workout now. My husband tell me I have a great glow about me when I come home from the gym!

Andrea, Don, all; kudos for all your successes!

I believe the center of gravity for weight control vs. loss is an active exercise program.
Of course in the Army, physical training is part of our culture. However, having grown up in California, physical education was part of the education process from grade school to the Univ
of Calif. Thus, exercise is a daily activity
like brushing one's teeth...for me the added incentive, is I get no alcohol (Beer, wine) unless I earn it (a minimum of 60 min of cardio daily 7 days a week--cross train with swimming when I can). I believe what Andrea and Don have latched on to is the inner joy, that daily exercise brings to one's life. It's great to see you share that joy with friends and loved ones! Wes

Thanks Wes. You are definately right about the exercise. Who would have ever thought that I would become a gym rat. Now I am up early every morning and to the gym. I also get upset when I can't get there or when the weather keeps me from getting out for a walk. Last month, I finished the month with over 19,000 calories burned doing cardio and lifted over 1,100,000 lbs. in weights. In addition I travelled almost 200 miles by walking, biking, or swimming and ended up number one in Fitpoints at our gym, 2nd in overall calories burned, and 4th in overall weight lifted.

As a diver I know you will appreciate this. Last year was the first time that I went diving (while on the Silver Whisper). We were diving a wreck off of Tortola. It took 24 lbs of weights just to get my larded body to sink! Our guide and my dive buddy went into the cargo hold and I tried to follow them, but unfortunately I got halfway into the doorway and got stuck. I couldn't get my fat body through it will all my gear. Not a pretty site. My friend actually got a picture of me stuck in the door. Now, that would be a great "before" picture.

There were lots of factors that gave me the motivation to finally do this. That was just one of many! Besides, now not only can I fit into a wet suit, but can now wear one without fear of being harpooned! LOL

Oh Don that is a truly gruesome story. We were on a flight inside China (the Regent Beijing excursion on to Xi'an) and there was a gentleman who was too big for the seat belt. They did not have any extenders so they actually tied him in with a piece of rope. I was so mortified for him!
I am still waiting for the exercise "Joy" to kick in. Still find it a chore after 3 years!

Well, I am on the exercise row now. It took a while to get back, but, I am doing it. We have a walking track at the park three blocks from the house. I am getting up, putting on the Nike's and just doing it. I forgot how great it makes you feel afterwards. The catalyst was that I did a short hike up at Fred and Pat's house and while I wasn't speedy gonzales, I did it and was not breathless - hill and all. I've been doing the walking thing since we're back home. I am now down 40lbs.

Sue, that is great. Anytime that you can go away and still lose weight is fantastic. Congratulations!

Helen, getting stuck in the doorway isn't nearly as tramatic as what that guy had to go through. How humiliating! I know because I used to have to have an extender as well and I would whisper to the stewardess quitely, because I was embarrased to have to ask.

Kathy, congratulations! You are doing so good. I am so proud of you. Diana and I still hope to see you before CROSS. Maybe sometime this summer we will make it out that way and can see you and Frank and all go out to a low carb dinner somewhere.

I am down another two pounds this week as well.

That's what I hear Andrea - the trainers here say MINIMUM 12 weeks before you get "bitten by the exercise bug" prior to that time - it is AWFUL and the reason many quit - I can relate - :(

Kathy, 40 lbs is a milestone! Next we need before/after pix from you as well! Keep up the great work!

Joanna, I don't think it took me 12 weeks to get "bitten" by having a personal trainer a couple of days a week, but perhaps that is because it was an "appointment". I was doing it for fitness, not weight loss, so that may be a factor. Those "appointments" were sacred to me when I was in law school not too many years ago. It was an outlet for stress for me. OTOH, making myself walk on my treadmill or get out in the neighborhood and do it myself to this day is a challenge. THAT might make me take 12 weeks to get bitten.

I was given a PV Club trainer for my last big b'day - no questions about that b'day - every morning at 6 am for an hour for 8 weeks forget it... was so painful - I went as I knew kids had paid - as I dragged my tush they kept telling me 12 weeks was the minimum for success - I was a drop out! Maybe they were right but for me I doubt it - J

I used to go at 5 p.m. after work for an hour. Appointments I keep, like at work, and loved it. When in school, Tues and Thu at 6 p.m. He wore me out, but I loved it. Different strokes.....

Thank you Wes!! I actually lived in California until I was 13, and remember gym class. I can still hear Mr. Frazier, my 7th grade gym teacher, saying "you'll thank me when you're 30" as he had us doing jumping jacks, pushups, situps, etc.!! You are completely right about the exercise - I never would have called myself an athlete, but I do now!

Don - I stopped diving a few years ago because I was so out of shape it was exhausting. I'm looking forward to diving again.

Ray and Penny - thank you so much!! I'm so happy I'm able to share this journey with so many who knew me "before".

Sue - congratulations!! That is so awesome!!

Kathy, way to go!! Great job on the walking. It will really make all the difference.

Joanna, I see my trainer once or twice a week in the mornings, but the other days I go to the gym after work. I don't know if I could go at 6:00 am every morning! Plus, I do need to get rid of work stress a lot of evenings - my poor favorite crosstrainer - it takes a lot of abuse!!

Andrea, I don't think that I could do 6:00am either. I am a late nighter, not a morning person. Thankfully, I have a job that starts at 10, so I am usually at the gym by about 7:15 each day. I am sure that both of us will enjoy diving so much more with much smaller bodies!

I had a trainer who made me her project - she'd hoped for me to be her poster child. She was here three days a week at 6am. I had to be up, take the dogs out and have been on the treadmill or walked the park's track BEFORE she got here. I worked out with her for a full year like that. Only once did she ever wake me up. I had a big cup of coffee in my spill proof cup instead of water. I loved the workouts - mat Pilates, weights, sometimes we'd go to the park and we used the kid's monkeybars or the other jungle jim things. I was the most in-shape when she came but I can tell you - I weighed the same the entire year we did that. I did not diet while she was coming here. She'd still be here - but she moved to Sarasota, Florida. It's a combination of lifestyle things!

Don, Andrea; glad to hear you are now both looking forward to diving again...

to whet your dive appetite..am now in Belize at
the El Pescador resort, did two dives this morning...on the second dive the dive master told us we would see nurse sharks, boy did we..there must of been a dozen, then Alonso, stroked them, turned them belly to belly, we stroked them too--we were totally enthralled the first 20 minutes of this dive--petting sharks!

Later we saw two Moray eels, and a hugh turtle--
it is a marvelously different world underwater as you know and I have 8 dives left.

Kathy, kudos to you for your success on the weight control/loss program...good for you.
Don't forget to tell us about your upcoming Oceania cruise.

Wes, sounds like you are in a devine place. Have a wonderful time - After the underwater walk in Tahiti, it whet my appetite for learning to dive. Maybe next summer that will be my goal.

I am thinking of doing a blog of my Oceania cruise. I will let you know.

Don, sorry, don't use a camera but another diver on our trips does, will ask him to share and then post accordingly.

Kathy, going to Tahiti (in Mar 05) was my incentive (and the PG dive team absolutely made it worthwhile), besides our T/A Dive Diva's urging (Susan Walsh)
that I got certified...just go down to your
LDS (local dive shop) and sign up...sounds like
another reason to do the PG again...and frankly, If I could get Ida to sign on, that's where we would go next fall vs. (Asia on the Mariner.

Kathy, your story about the trainer made me smile...as my doctor says. be grateful you're so active - can you imagine what you'd be if you sat at your computer all day...YIKES, that's what I did today!

If your weight doesn't change with exercise, at least you have the pleasure of eating well - and as I've discovered if you don't exercise you will certainly weigh more.

Wes - exercise for wine - that's my motto!

Margo,

Hooah...here are some (AE (alcohol exercise)) rules to follow:

60 min= wine with dinner (e.g. a nice shiraz)
70 min = drinks (martini/G&T and wine with dinner)
80-100 min (i got in 103 min today) = all inclusive--any thing/everything goes!)

Cheers,

Wes

Hey Wes, I like it, 70 minutes and I can have pre dinner martini and wine with dinner. I shall put this to the test!
Kathy, a blog would be great. Lots of interest in Oceania. I am presently booked to do Greece/Turkey/Egypt with the new Azamara in Nov 08 but not too sure we will go. Maybe your trip will turn my husband's reluctance around!

I'm going to have to keep track of the exercise minutes in exchange for wine on FJORDS!! Right now I only have wine or a cocktail on Saturday nights.

Had another great week - down 2.5 lbs for a grand total of 81 gone! I have 2 weeks before FJORDS, and it was my goal to have lost 85 lbs before heading to Copenhagen, so I'm right on target.

Having lost this weight has made me a changed person. I cannot believe the amount of energy I have. My group at work moved yesterday to a new floor that was recently built out for us. I was at the office from 6:45 am until 5:45 pm and felt just like the energizer bunny as I ran around finishing last minute packing along with getting my usual work finished.

Even better, I was asked earlier this week by the director of my department to be her executive assistant!! Some of you know I've been pretty tired of my job for quite some time - I'm basically the office manager - and have been yearning to do something different. Her current assistant (who has only been working with her for 2 months) has decided it's not a good fit (actually - it's mutual) and has started looking for another job. So, I feel really honored that she asked me because I know we're going to make a great team.

It's amazing how losing some weight can change a person's life!!

Congratultions everyone! I've been following all your sucesses. As summer hits, everyone is getting in their stride. I've started going to boot camp every day
bay area boot camp It' group excercise for women at 6:30am every morning. There's a little too much running for me, but I feel good when it's over!

Kathy, I'd love to read a blog of Oceania. My friends go on it regularly and love it.

Andrea, you are doing so good! Great work at getting to your goal. Congratulations too on the new job. Isn't it amazing how the weight loss changes things? Not just your outlook, but the outlook of others as well.

Julie, good for you too for joining the boot camp. While I can't run (with these knees), I don't like doing the other stuff that I need to do either, but always feel better for doing so.

Andrea, Don & Kathy, you all have done so well!! Very happy for you! And, thanks for sharing your stories - it's a pleasure to read your commentary about the good days & the not so good days. You are an inspiration to many of us.

Andrea, so GREAT that you have a new job opportunity to add to your many successes! Can't wait to give you a hug on Fjords. Let's see now, for all inclusive, flowing wine on Fjords, how many trillions of minutes/hours are we going to be exercising each day?? :p
