I can eat potatoes. But then I can't have protein at that meal. No mixing starch and protein for me at a single meal - exception is I can have a 1/2 turkey sandwich (or similar) for lunch or I can have a slice of pizza. I can have 1/2 turkey sand for lunch 2x a week and I can have a pasta dinner once a week. And not on the same day. I can have cereal for breakfast - measured but all protein is preferred and filled in with all the veggies I can eat. No spinach the last few weeks (ha ha)

Kathy, how do you keep it all straight?

I'm with Doris--pasta is really the only thing I miss.

Wow, that is dedication Kathy. I don't write anything down. I basically know that I can have about 4 to 7 oz of protein at each meal, which is basically the size of my fist. Other than that, I have to keep my net carbs under 30 per day, of which I need to have at least one small salad.

Per the National Registry of something in Washington, successful losers who have lost at least 20 pounds & kept it off for a number of years (you can see I am fuzzy here but I have seen this referred to in all my readings) all kept food diaries. This is the cornerstone of weight watchers also. Something about writing it down so you can see what & how much you are eating tends to limit your mindless eating.

You are all doing great recording consistant loses. Congratulate yourselves!

Best wishes,

Jackie

Once in a while we have spaghetti for dinner. But we use soba instead of regular pasta, Japanese buckwheat. Very nice. I have a small portion, and make sure the sauce is healthy and light.

Jackie, you are probably talking about the National Academies of Sciences. I think I read that article about prolonged weight loss in one of their publications. A good discipline to get into.

Wendy, sounds like a good option. I have even found some tortillas that I can have, that are high enough in dietary fiber, so that the net carb result is pretty low.

Well, I had a very good week this week and lost another 4 lbs, making the total 32 lbs over the last nine weeks.

Well I just did my exercises, at least 3 of the 4 components. And I had the courage to try on my beautiful brown jeans. They still fit, but are tight. I find that most of my weight is around my middle, so am fighting that bulge with Pilates. Just 5 or 10 pounds would make them fit like a dream!

I wish I had a personal trainer who would be here a few hours a day to make me eat "smarter" and also exercise...I lack self-motivation big time, lately! :(

Don you are doing GREAT! :app:

Wendy, getting into your favorite clothes is always a good motivator. Good job on the exercises. I know it is hard to find the time to do it or even want to do it. I worked out yesterday, but just decided to take a break today. The bed just felt too good this morning.

Thanks, Sue! It is really good to have the support. Sometimes I get depressed just thinking about how far I have to go, but it helps to keep thinking that each week I get a little bit closer. This is really going to take a long time and a lot of commitment. I have to break it down in small segments in order to keep motivated.

Don, 32 pounds in 9 weeks! That is just fantastic.

I agree with the small segment mentality. I lost 1 pound in three weeks and consider that a victory.

This week, I missed two workouts, but had all the exercise I could take with cleaning out the garage and faux painting the family room and kitchen. Wow, what a job that was! Every joint in my body ached!

The good news is I worked off another 3 lbs to make the total now 35 lbs.

How did everybody else do?

Don,

Amazing what wedding plans entail, huh? But somehow these events also require that garages and closets get cleaned out and homes redecorated.

Well, I'm not dieting at all now. But we have just decided to SAND so I'm starting to panic!
I am excercising somewhat regularly. We now have one and a half hour yoga class at my job twice a week that I go to. I also walk for an hour a couple of times a week, but I'm barely maintaining. Thank goodness there's no formal nights in the carribean, my formal wear won't fasten. Yikes.

Oh boy, you had to remind me Kathy! I'm not a big dessert person, but it's hard to resist on a cruise, I admit. I often start out with the "nothing" plate, then progress to sugar-free ice cream, then it's downhill from there. This time I have vowed to try the cheese plate. I know cheese, especially fancy French cheese is not a diet option, but better for me than the sugar.

Wendy, you are so right! Cruises are tough. I plan on keeping up my exercise routine, but I am going to enjoy. I have figured on a 3 lb. weight gain max. Anything less than that and I will be ecstatic.

BTW, does RSSC have many low carb options especially on their desserts?

Love the cheese plate - but - then you go from a sugar problem to a salt problem! And with all the wine at dinner then you have the problem of not caring about it anyway! cheer

There's always a sugar-free option or two, ice cream and maybe a cookie or something, more for the diabetics than the low-carbers. There's usually some kind of fruit as well. I actually mean it about the cheese, I love cheese, and would almost always rather have that than something sweet. Of course, then there's the glass of port to go with!

Thanks for info Wendy. I like cheese as well and thankfully it is something that I can do on my diet as well, as long as it is in moderation.

Now, port on the other hand, I have a problem with. My first time to have port was at our anniversary dinner where we had wine parings. I guess I overdid it just a tad on the port and the mixing with the other drinks was not a good thing. I got so sick. I can still drink it, but each time I do, I remember that night and it kind of spoils the experience. It was really an interesting experience when we visited Oporto last year and we did the Sandeman's Port Lodge tour and we ended up sampling the different varieties at the end.

Don, we did the Sandeman's tour too! Something about the log that caught my eye. It was really enjoyable, and the port was amazing. But I know what you mean about tipples with a history, I'm sure we all have memories like that!

I'd forgotten you were the couple who went to Porto!

Weigh to go DON!

Well, 4 days in Las Vegas were good to me but not to my plan. No gain - no loss so I can't complain.

They published the Biggest Loser plan in our newspaper today. It's very close to what I do already. A bit high on Protein - 8 oz at three meals each, 2 Grain servings a day and 4 cups veggies a day with 200 free calories a day for salad dressings, sauces or sweets. But the 2 hours of exercise a day is the biggest drawback.

Kathy, looking at the Biggest Loser diet, you are right. It is high in protein, even for me. 24 oz a day of protein??? Wow!

I have about 2-3 oz at breakfast, another 5-6 at lunch, and about 7-8 oz at dinner, so I average somewhere between 15 and 20oz. Grains, I don't do, except something like a low carb tortilla (about 5-7 net carbs), but then about only once or twice a week. Non starch veggies are about right. I have about 3-4 cups per day. One of those servings must be a salad. And no fruit except for berries.

Well now it's the five week push! In fact, we leave for Palm Beach one month from tomorrow. We should have docs sometime today, so we will have a little aerobic doc dancin' to do tonight! :app:

Inspite of the wedding on Saturday and all the lunches and dinners with relatives in town, I still managed to lose just under two pounds this week. It was tough however. That wedding cake was awfully good, but boy talk about a sugar spike! Whoooeee!

How did everybody else do this week?

I had a birthday. Frank asked me where I wanted to have a quick lunch. Can you say In and Out? Today I was on track. Tomorrow too. 5 weeks of chicken, fish veggies and no carbs sound like they are in order.

Time for the weekly update. How did everybody do?

I'm down a couple more pounds this week. Four more weeks till cruise time and it is definately getting tougher. I found it harder to workout this past week and harder to stay on task. Maybe post wedding blues!

I had the stomach flu all last week and get this--I gained pounds! All I could take were crackers (and I had had none since April).

Good for you Doug. 2 is great. even better is that the cruise is getting close.

Lost another three this week. Workouts are getting better. Maybe it was the extra aerobic music that I put on my I-Pod or maybe the cooler weather! Whichever the case, I just know I had a little extra pep in my step last night.

No weight loss this past week and here I thought wine was good for my diet! LOL Oh, and I guess that low carb cheesecake that I had wasn't particularly low calorie. Oh well, after my birthday celebration tonight I can get back on track and start on making it up.

Probably a bad time to bring this one back up, but after our SAND cruise I stepped on the scale today and OH MY!

Started back today. Went from all that food on the ship to starvation! Guess I'm starting on my new year resolution early.

Hey Don, yes, it's time to get back on track. On the one hand, by the end of a cruise like that I am feeling waaay overfed, and am happy to scale back. On the other hand, it's Christmas, with all that entails. And the appetite is still there, admittedly.

I have the luxury of having NOT weighed myself for several months, so I can only see the results in the mirror, or in my waistline.

I really don't think I could do a long cruise. They say that you start eating normally after a couple of weeks, but I can't imagine doing that. I guess one key would be to start an exercise program on board and stick to it--I was walking to the subway yesterday, and realized that it was probably about 10 times around the ship! So normal activity levels would have to be maintained, for sure.
