Last second free throw lifts Cal over New Mexico! Next up: Ohio State Florida 73 and San Diego State 49. Creighton is their next opponent. For anyone else with their team in the NIT, here are updated results: NIT results through 3-19-08 Just a few more hours to the NCAA kick off! Cheers, Anne

I got in late last night. Expecting to see my name as last place finisher in 2 weeks - but hey, have to try. This weekend is always my favorite of the entire tournament. Impossible to watch every game, but fun to keep up with all the regions. Good luck everyone!

Anne, thanks for keeping the records. Unfortunately, USC and AZ losing dropped me to last; I have already lost one of my final four picks. :(

B-E-L-M-O-N-T !!!!
Oz and I are proud and disappointed ... "so close, yet so far" - Goliath escaped this one. We are drained from the emotional roller-coaster of an intense battle that epitomized why we all love this time of year. We had (and are having a blast) ... we were peppered with questions and comments at half time: "where IS Belmont?", "Nice first half." And on the concourse after the game even a Duke fan told Oz "you deserved to win." As people noticed our Belmont shirts, it was pats on our backs, nods of heads in respect, and a continuous "you played great," "we're proud of Belmont," and on and on. Oz was/is all smiles and walking a bit taller.
The [current] three most memorable moments from last night:
1. Sharing jubilant high fives with Oz in the throes of a near-Cinderella experience.
2. Sitting among a contingent of Belmont fans who were adopted by the Arizona and WVU crowds who enthusiastically joined the chants of "Let's Go Belmont!" [and not only because they did not want to play Duke on Saturday].
3. Witnessing Belmont's coach, Rick Byrd, receive a standing ovation from the entire arena as he walked from the tunnel to the Belmont section an hour after the Belmont game ended.
It was a MasterCard father-son evening --- priceless.

Belmont sure did deserve to win! I have chills reading your description, Luke. Those kinds of games are priceless, indeed. And we have an EYEWITNESS reporter here on LCT ... how GREAT is THAT?? A standing ovation for coach and team is so in order.
That's what I love about the conference tournaments .. co-opting the other team fans onto your side against the Goliath. Loyalties are as fluid as can be, making for memorable crowd moments. Genuinely great performances are acknowledged by all involved .. can't beat college basketball tournaments for a wonderful sporting experience.
Cheers, Anne

OK .. edited for the late games on Friday. Too bad Belmont didn't get Tampa for its first round venue. Villanova benefited from whatever's in the water down there .. upsets all the way around. Thanks for the update, Anne. I actually filled out the bracket in the final moments before we headed to D.C. and it's been fun to follow. Oz and I also submitted entries on ESPN.
We roamed D.C. today and folks kept talking to us when they spotted my Belmont cap. We're watching the final games tonight, still stunned by the day in Tampa!
Two more games in D.C. tomorrow and then an early Sunday a.m. return to Dallas and then a Friday afternoon flight to Ft. Lauderdale for Monday's Mariner departure.
NCAA tourney and a Regent cruise --- does it get any better?
BTW, anyone have suggestions on how we should ask to have the tourney games shown on the Mariner next weekend?

Hopefully we will be about to get the final game...... one year ahead and I'm already planning!! Hope you can get the games onboard. Looking forward to your seamail.

Luke - I am so jealous of you getting to see those games LIVE - Wear that Belmont hat PROUDLY!
Sweated that 'Nova game last night. Whew - those guards (and Clemson's lousy foul shooting) pulled the game out.
Anyone have a clue why some teams are so lousy at shooting fouls? If there is one aspect of basketball that should show improvement by practice & concentration, it is foul shooting. It is really an issue of finding te correct rhythm & motion and then following it each & every time. No deviations. Since there is no one guarding the free throw shooter, there is nothing stopping him from following the same motion each time. If they can do that successfully, they should definitely shoot around 80% or better. Why do some players make it look so difficult? PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE

Gil, I'm sure that the Clemson fans agree with your free throw comments !!!! I've never understood shooting less than 75-80% free throws, and I attribute some of that to kids' preference for dunks, 3-pointers, and trying to make SportsCenter.

Our family has found itself happily caught up in yesterday's thrilling upsets. It's been one BIG party in San Diego!! Cinderella University of San Diego (USD) beating UCONN ignited quite a celebration! My daughter is an alumnus of USD, class of 2001. She was attending a class at USC's (yes, U S "C") graduate school during the game yesterday when her cell phone started going crazy with text messages galore! The word got out in class & even the USC students with her started cheering for USD.! Everyone stopped & started checking the game via their cell phones. She said it was an incredible feeling having the USC students cheering for her team!! (It is like Anne said where other schools' fans start joining in with your celebration.) The rest of the family was going nuts watching the game.. editing to add: and praying for the USD players to just SURVIVE the size differential!!
We have now been bitten by the "madness" and are all together with family & friends enjoying a great holiday weekend. It's amazing that BOTH USD's men's and women's teams won their conferences, automatically making it to the big dance. I sure can appreciate Oz & Luke's thrilling experience together at the games in D.C. Though we aren't in Tampa, here in San Diego Kipley & I are having a fantastic experience! Our little team has already surpassed everyone's expectations....the rest is icing on the cake after yesterday!! Thanks for listening to another proud parent :)

Oz and I are about ready to grab some lunch before heading to the Xavier/Purdue and Duke/WVU games. Thankfully we have been to D.C. before so we don't feel too bad about focusing our time on the Verizon Center this trip rather than the wonderful sights of D.C. However, we took time yesterday to roam the National Mall and saw the World War II Memorial for the first time ... a wonderful infusion of patriotic pride.

Michele - how great is THAT? Wishing the women's team equal success in their tournament. Cal's team has had an incredible run .. it will be a heck of a shootout. Give Kipley my heartiest congratulations on a stunning upset (or maybe two).
Back to the men's tournament - I'm backing WVU over Duke. Xavier/Purdue should be a no holds barred kind of matchup. Purdue never lets go easily .. nor does Michigan State. Ah .. from my formative years in Big 10 land.
Let the games begin!

Thanks, Anne & Joanna. We were just praying that the USD players would SURVIVE up against the goliaths of UCONN. What a funny size differential that was... Western Kentucky definitely looks stronger. Mercy. Tomorrow we all go to the campus for Easter Mass & where the Bishop will be saying an extra prayer for our team - we're going to need it!!
Yes, the women's team will be equally under the gun. I'll also be watching & cheering for your De Paul Blue Demons, Anne. They beat UCONN, too, didn't they in an awesome game during the regular season??

Anne, I wish Michigan State had held back against my Owls. :(
Luke - do some cheering for Xavier for me - gotta stick with the A-10 & Big East teams. And I also like the teams with the decent grad rates & was surprised to see Xavier up near the top.
As for Clemson's FT shooting - that guy Oglesby hit 8 in a row, and shot near 90% for the year. Yet he was on the bench for a while near the end of the game. Odd.
It's the FT shooting that's going to bring Memphis down.

In our seats ... 5th row on the baseline by the Duke cheerleaders ... Plenty of Duke fans but WVU owns the arena in bright yellow. 20 minutes to tipoff
BTW, we give top ratings to Duke mascot, Purdue cheerleaders, and Belmont band. Concessions are OK, but no special food. T-shirts are $22-25 ... Yes, the Belmont NCAA shirt will debut on the Mariner in a couple of days.
Teams are on the floor ... More later.

Hi Luke & Oz - Trying to watch the game while doing work on the computer. Hard to multi-task with a game ongoing! Your report from Thursday night really gave a feel to what happened. Didn't get that game in Houston until the last few minutes. When A&M plays at the same time - well, you know the drill. Continued fun in DC and awaiting seamail from the cruise.

Duke fans turned up the volume and it was a half of intense energy. I'm curious to see how many fans stay for Game 2. We're sitting by the Purdue section, but we'll be cheering for Xavier.
Betty, we'll be watching A&M tonight and cheering for Josh Carter (I announced his games in H.S.), but UCLA is BIG in our brackets.

Picked Duke, but pulling for WVU to upset Duke. Duke looks shaky, but they ARE Duke. Must be crazy there in the Stands, Luke! Wish I was there.

WVU wanted this more than Duke. Alexander is the real deal. Duke's lack of depth and some underwhelming play also assisted WVU. Watch out for WVU !!!
On to game 2.

Gil - I'm so sorry. Michigan State has always been a monster when it counts .. seems to be in their blood. At least you still have Nova in the mix.
Luke .. better crank it up a notch for Xavier. Purdue's off to a hot streak. Ack! They are boiler makers for a reason.
WVU came right on through. I've got them meeting Xavier next, winning and then going home courtesy of UCLA. It's great having the mountaineer fans at tournaments .. they are loud when it counts .. yee haw!
Michele - thanks for the encouragement. We play at 7 pm tonight for us East Coasties. I've got the nails painted & the triple blue hoop earrings in. I will be donning the 2005 Sweet Sixteen T-Shirt for extra good luck tonight. I will have to head to Rooney's & get them to tune in the satellite so I can see the game!

Oz and I were NOT popular with the adjacent Purdue fans, but we loved cheering for Xavier. The Dukies left the bldg after their loss and the WVU fans were drained from game 1. So, game 2 lacked the energy of the opener.
We're now watching the games on CBS and Oz is checking his brackets on Yahoo, Facebook, ESPN, and CBS.

Great photo, Luke. Haven't seem photo of Oz since the Ice Bar in Stockholm. Not that long ago. You both good great. You are right. You could tell the arena was almost empty by the end of the game. TAMU is leading right now & I have UCLA to win the whole thing. Wouldn't that be something! Safe travels over your next 2 days. Hi to Paula and Meredith.

Oops! My editing skills were not up to snuff this morning. You're up there now, Jim.
The Yahoo! site was not so clear about how to name the brackets. I have to go back & edit the entry names when I post the results.
If you like, you can edit your bracket name (like Jim B or whatever else appeals).
Cheers, Anne
