I'm starting to keep my eyes open for purchases for my upcoming PG voyage in June as the spring & summer stuff hits stores. Like last year, I'm seeing a lot of those pretty flow-y skirts paired with nice tanks, and was thinking for dinners, I could bring a variety and mix and match. What think you veterans? Too casual?
Also, any online shopping site recommends for buying cruise wear and coverups? (I usually throw T-shirts over my b-suits but know I'd like to look a leeetle nicer in public on the PG! :) )
Thanks for any advice.

Hi Sue, Check out Chico's. They have a great selection of really nice clothes that work out very well for travel. http://www.chicos.com/store/home_intro.asp If you sign up for their Passport Club frequent shopper program, you are sent brochures quite often that contain coupons for some additional savings.

Sue, I think those flowy skirts are perfect for a night on the PG. Chico's is good and so is www.coldwatercreek.com. Last year there were a lot of women in sheath dresses - like this one below, Be sure to bring a wrap since it can get chilly on the ship due to the air conditioning!

Hi Sue, Check out Chico's and Coldwater Creek. Also, buy a paero or two once you get there instead of t-shirts for bathing suit coverups. Everyone wears them and they loook great. You won't be able to resist buying one anyway.
I've started a collection of shawls to take on cruises. That way, you can wear the sleeveless dresses and tops without getting cold in the dining rooms. Plus, they are fund to collect as you travel. Do you get to fly to Hong Kong? If so, there's your place for shawls.
By the way, a late welcome to LCT from me. I think you joined while I was on my cruise so I missed saying hello. I'm a writer, too; so is LeeAnne. Hey, we almost have enough LCT writers to start our own writing group . You've done a great job on your website. Congrats.

I guess I march to the beat of a different drummer but I don't think you need a "special" wardrobe for a cruise. I dress for comfort and always seem to fit in. Cool, loose and comfortable for French Polynesia.

Oh, I don't have a "special" cruise wardrobe. I wear my cruise clothes all the time. They are comfortable, don't wrinkle and work great in AZ.

Same here - no special wardrobe for cruising. But when I buy clothes, I do judge how well what I buy will travel. Nothing worse than having something that comes out of the suitcase looking like it got slept in.

Sue: I have not been on the PG but think your idea of flowy skirts and tank tops sounds perfect - Donna I doubt anyone has a "special" closet at home just for cruise clothes - like you I wear my things at home and at sea!! Joanna

When I buy clothes, they have to pass the "travel" test. If they won't make it on a cruise or trip, then I don't buy them.

Hey, Karen, you live in the north. You need all those extra clothes like sweaters and things. Once you move to AZ all you will need is cruise clothes. Don't know what that will do to your shoe collection.

Karen,
I use the cruises as an excuse to buy clothes. Generally, they are wearable for regular life, however. Except for today, when only warm woolies will do!

I'm with you, Kathy. A cruise means a trip or two to Chico's! After the cruise, we're poor and I have to wait for the next trip for major clothes shopping.

Karen, I did nothing for 2 months but shop for this cruise. So, yes, I shop for trips, even more shoes. But like Donna said, we live in cold climates, so we have a good excuse!! Sue, the skirts and tops you described will be perfect. That is EXACTLY what I wore. Some of the longer skirts were a little glittery, some were not. They travel well, and are easy to find! Happy shopping!!!

Karen, I'm with you, and I don't think it's because we live in the north. After all, we have summers here too.
Some of the things I have worn on the PG, I have worn in the summer here, like sundresses, but...most of the outfits I have for cruising I never wear otherwise. But then I tend to live in jeans most of the time, with the odd business outfit when I have to. I wear sandals all summer, and mostly capris (yes, to work), and shorts whenever I can.
For my upcoming WAVE cruise, I'm pretty well set, since I shopped for it last summer. Except for some new summer tops, and maybe a new pair of pants or two (depending on how my diet goes, not well at the moment.)

There is a line of thought for travel that you bring clothes and toss them as you travel. Like old undies etc. I tried it for a few things on my land trip but I don't think it would work for a cruise. I usually get enough new things for a trip that I could not do that. The anticipation of going and having a bunch of new stuff to wear is part of the fun.

I posted a "Throw As You go" thread a while back relating to our trip to China. It's great for me when I want to do just carry on and a lot of shopping during the trip!!
A cruise is a bit different though! And, to FP, clothes are less bulky and (for me, anyway) much easier to pack! Long skirts, tank tops, a few shawls/pashminas and bathing suits. Fun to buy the sarong/pareos in FP for cover ups! That, and a pair of reef shoes and you're all set!!!
Editing to add my apologies to Karen.....I do take more than just reef shoes!! OK....a FEW pair of sandals! ;)

Thanks for the great clothing suggestions. I'm glad to hear tanks and flowy skirts are appropriate for dinner because I'm going to focus on those because I can blend all that stuff into my warm weather wardrobe here. Plus mix & match makes packing light! I do love to buy new stuff for vacations, though. I think ChatKat said it's part of the excitement, and it is! Here's the kind of outfit I think will work well (from Nordstrom): Shoes aren't going to be a problem, I'll bring only a few all-purpose pairs, but unfortunately my 13 yr-old daughter has overnight turned into the Paris Hilton of packing. I took her and my son to Fla recently, and when we're ready to leave for the airport, we all meet at the bottom of the staircase with our luggage--one piece each for carry on plus one extra small piece if nesc. was the instructions. They're airline kids, experienced world travelers, they know how to pack. Or so I thought! She comes down with a suitcase and a backback--the ones we decided on but OVERstuffed to the point that if they didn't explode in the car, they'd never be able to fit in the overhead bin. She'd brought five pairs of shoes for a five day trip (I hear KarenS saying, "And your point is?" :) )!!! So, we tear down the suitcases and between me and my son split what she claimed she HAD to have, and I made her leave stuff behind. For the PG, I'm going to give her a 25" suitcase to roll-along herself and tell her it can go to 44 pounds, just for her stuff so no stressing for me, and I'm going to weigh it BEFORE we leave! Ha! And then SHE'S responsible for dragging it to Papeete and back! Donna--great to meet you! How cool is that you and LeeAnn are writers. No, I didn't know. We'll have to meet up sometime on one of the off-topic threads so you can tell me what you write. Thanks about my website. I visited your blog and it's great! I enjoyed reading about the Manila stopover on your last cruise--you had me all choked up describing how Capt Dag got the staff's families onboard.

Bonnie, I'm a big fan of "throw as you go," as you know. More room to shop when you see something wonderful that is calling out to you to take it home!
Comfortable works for me, too, Joanna!

I thought going on a cruise was the perfect excuse to buy all the great clothes you always wanted! We are just home from the wc segment 3 on the Voyager and we loved it. The dinning rooms were not too cold this year, I hardly ever needed a shawl. Cruise wear clothes are really it on that trip

Everytime we are on the Voyager it gets better. Right now I'm so sad to be off the ship and back to reality. The fact that we booked a few segments for next year is the only thing helping me. I am already looking forward to it and ready to start making plans. I guess it will take me a few days to get back into the swing of things...

Welcome home, Doris.
Sue, that skirt looks perfect. Sounds like the PG will offer plenty of atmosphere for another book? Yes, let's have an off-topic writing discussion one day with you and Lee Anne. Glad you visited the blog, thanks for the complement. I really fell in love with Polynesia on our recent cruise. The PG is definitely in my future. Anticipating a cruise is part of the fun so have enjoy your shopping.
