This morning I discovered the Pan Pacific in Vancouver is running a summer special with rates much lower than usual. You do have to call to get the rate but they have an US 800#. The only downside is that the entire amount is charged through when you book and there is no refund if you cancel. I found it to be a very good deal for me.

Betty, what is the rate? I can't remember what we paid last time we stayed there?

I think it came out to $153 US for city view room - the cheapest. Their concierge is setting up a tour to Victoria Island that I can do in 1 day. Happy for someone to do this for me. I was going nuts trying to figure all the different transportation modes it involved to do it by myself. I know other hotels would do the same - but thought it nice they asked.

That sounds like a great price, I think we paid over $200?

Their internet special which has the same pay now, no refunds is $261 Canadian for the same room - so that is why I feel like I got a great price.

Betty: We did a one day trip to Victoria Island - very long day but well worth it. The Buchart Gardens are fantastic! Thanks for the Pan Pacific tip! Lee

Dear Texans and Ozzies -

Not to be too much of a crazed o/c Northwesterner, but I must correct the references to "Victoria Island".

The magnificent island to which you refer is Vancouver Island, on the southern tip of which sits the charming city of Victoria.

Even if it makes for a long day, it will be well worth it for you to make the trek. Butchart Gardens is (are??) simply lovely, worth the trip even if you visit nothing else.

If you make it down to Victoria, Rogers Chocolates, just a block or so north of the Empress Hotel on Government Street, is a great little shop. It's all 100-year-old varnished wood showcases filled with wonderful chocolates, particularly the famous Victoria Creams and Empress Squares. A chocoholic's dream, indeed.

Have fun visiting Vancouver Island.

Cheers, Fred

Great rate. Suzanne found a similar one for us at the Pan Pacific for MUSH through some special she found.

Betty, don't miss Victoria especially if it is something easy through the concierge at the PP. We spent an overnight there before MUSH, and loved it. My second visit, and would go for a third. No need to stay overnight if it suits you better to do it in one day. We used the next day to drive around the island before coming back to Vancouver.

Hi Fred - I stand corrected! It's something that my tiny brain has trouble remembering - I'll say it out loud 100 times! Vancouver Island!! I love it whatever I call it! Thought I was wrong with my spelling of Butchart Gardens. Again, they're wonderful and not to be missed!

Betty: Fred says there is a great chocolate shop in Victoria - I just love dark chocolate! I'll have to commission you to buy me some should you find the shop! I'm the biggest (literally) chocoholic around!
